Hi all,

For the life of me i can't see the etched crown on the crystal of my 2008 Datejust. Can anyone help?

It is very hard to see without magnification. You need to use a loupe or magnifying glass.

Take a small flashlight and light onto the crystal with it from the 12 towards the 6 o' clock position. This will make the laser etched coronet ("LEC") literally glow up.

Someone has informed me that the latest Datejust's may not have the Laser etched crystal after all! surely not!

A great deal would depend on the colour of your dial. If it's a dark dial, then it's easy to view the etching using a 10x loupe and a table lamp.

If it's a light coloured dial, then it's very difficult. With my Platty, it's virtually impossible to catch the etching; but I can see it....barely.

With the black dial Subby, you can see it almost instantly!!

I dont know weather this is reason to worry or not but my new Datejust shows no etched crown! be it under torchlight or natural light. It was bought from an AD. Would it be possible that for the 2008 model year that Rolex may well have dropped the etched crown on the Datejust and others, as the fakers can now replicate it?

Are you in a dark room and shining that flashlight through the side of the crystal? From 12 toward 6 ?

THis is a common topic, and really, some people just have difficulty seeing it. The flashlight method works very well. Also, it may be helpful if you look at it from a pretty acute angle.....not head on. Once you see it once, It'll be easy to find. Kind of like when your buddy points out a scratch on your car you never noticed, but now notice it EVERY time.......'cept nicer.

Sometimes i'll be in the car, waiting at a light with my hands on the wheel, and the sun will hit the edge of the crystal just right, and the coronet just about lights up. I can see it clearly from 3 feet away. That's a pretty nice way to start the day.....

I have the same model 116200 Z series datejust and I found mine with bright sunlight. My dial is Rhodium Roman.

Hmmm, no, the etched crown is not on my crystal at all, i have had two other people try to view it under the Flashlight and at angles etc etc. My watch is an M prefix 2008 Datejust. Maybe Rolex have dropped the crown so to speak, on non professional series watches..

I wouldn't worry about it - I've yet to see the etched crown on both my Date Just and Day-Date (bought last Sept and Dec and both brand new from an AD). They both have white dials.

I have, however, seen the etched crown on my new GMT IIc and when I did, it was an amazing moment

. JJ's right - it does show up a lot more clearly against a black dial. What did surprise me, though, was just how small it actually was. I was looking for something much bigger.

Rest assured that it will be there on yours, too - it's just that you've not seen it yet. If in doubt, I'm confident your AD will confirm it's there using his magnifying loupe and when he does, ask him to let you see it. You'll be able to sleep at night again

Brilliant! I have just found the Laser Etched crown on the crystal of my Datejust, talk about microscopic! I found it by holding my watch into the sunset at about 45 degrees looking down from 12 to 6 on the dial "as advised earlier" and there it is, it seems much smaller than the crown etching on the Sub etc.

Good call you finally found it!

BTW.: The ONLY current Rolex watch that does NOT have the LEC is the Milgauss GV (green edged crystal).

I just had a horrid time locating the lec on my 16200 silver dial d serial.

Trick...in a dark room...shine a torch from 3 oclock flush with the crystal and look from 6 oclock slightly at an angle of 30 degrees from plane of crystal.

I have found that the flash on the iPhone (or the flashlight - same light source) is a perfect way to make the etched crown show up.

Shine a light at a shallow angle across the crystal. Move the light around a bit. It may be easier to see if you look at the crystal from a shallow angle. They are easily visible against a dark face, but may be less obvious against a light or white face.
