Good deal in Spain???

looking for some help. From the U.S. traveling on vacation in Barcelona for two weeks. Went into a Rolex AD here to see what they had in stock and what the prices were. Deals seem very good, which made me question myself. So looking for feedback. Black/Blue GMT for €7850, and she says I will get back 17% VAT at the airport, bringing it to €6537. This is far less than what I could get it for in the US. Submariner date for €7500 and no-date for €6600, both with 17% VAT refunds, again, far cheaper than US. Am I missing something or is this just truly a great deal??? Help appreciated.

believe me with the Euro losing so much value against the dollar and Spain in such dire straits, its no surprise at all that you're getting those prices.and if you push a little more they might even give you an extra discount. its a no brainer

Go for it. Spain and Italy are excellent places to buy Rolexes at the moment. Euro to dollar exchange rate coupled with the local economy makes for a situation that is in your favor. It's been many years since Americans have had such an opportunity in Europe. Take advantage of it.

Sounds great, do it. For so long traveling to Europe was expensive for Americans. We both remember probably how strong the Euro used to be. The Yen too for that matter. A few years back the Yen was 78 to the Dollar. Now it's nearly 125. I'd get that GMT!

Chaps

I live in both England and in Spain and believe me, Spain is really cheap at the moment due to the weak euro.

Also Spanish dealers expect you to haggle as it is part of the culture and thanks to the recession which is still hitting hard in Spain, discounts are easily achievable.

Regards

Mick

^^^ For those who want to avoid paying duty to US Customs upon their return, it's easier to just wear the watch alone and have no accessories if they happen to search your luggage. The rationale (rightfully so) being that no one travels with the box, guarantee card and accessories.

I would claim it. Most likely your honesty with US Customs will go a long way. I suspect that after being lied to daily and people trying to sneak things past them constantly that your honesty would be refreshing. They might not even make you pay duties.

If you lie and get caught... well..

I really wish that this constant get around customs lawbreaking advice was prohibited in a forum rule.

You get a great deal and we will celebrate with you.

For an even better deal, find an AD who will give you the full 21% VAT refund rather than using a refund company who also take a cut (hence 17% net to you). Then bargain hard and you should get up to 10% off for SS. I reckon you could get a sub date for 5600Euro.

This.
I claimed Sub date at customs and only paid $180 in duties.
Honesty goes along way.

Duty is calculated on material and movement not the price.
Remember, lying to federal agents is a felony

Just returned from a 2 week vacation in Spain, where we purchased a Steel/Everose 36mm Datejust for my wife. Great price, too. We claimed the watch on customs form and were waived right through, no duty to pay.

Seriously, many members here should've collected enough honesty to pay for a new watch by now?

Doesn't work does it?

I'd be very surprised if anybody bothers you over a "personal-affect" item? Wear your "second-hand" watch when walking past the customs. ;)

BS some of us don't have to play smuggler while buying watches. I claim all mine that I buy in Canada and have yet to be charged the duty.

If they want to charge me, so be it. I negotiate the duty into the price when I buy at the AD.

Many people are crossing international borders with family etc and that's no time to be playing games with customs.

It would appear the customs impact varies between countries, in Australia you pay full GST 10% of the value of the watch in Australia. No negotiation, no ifs or buts...... If I was being asked to pay $180 on bringing a duty free item into my country I would do it every day of the week..........

What is the average discount percentage to be had in Barcelona? I saw a dealer this afternoon that I will visit tomorrow (Tous - Passeig de Gracia).

Were you able to get VAT paid at the airport?
