Would you spend one month's income on a watch? How about a years?

I see a lot of people here buying watches that probably cost more than they make in a month. In some rare cases even a year. Would you do it? How much is too much in your opinion?

I think it's all relative.
I mean if you have no commitments, have cash saved up, and zero dependants, you could spend 6 months worth of pay and get away with it. (not saying you should)

A friend of mine buys expensive watches very often, but recovers the money within no time as he pretty much has no other expenses at all.
He recently got a watch that cost him 5 months of pay. He saves up a lot still.

Things change when you have a wife / kids, responsibilities.

All just depends.

Its really divers here because there are people who have to save a loooonggg time for the same watch another forum member can almost buy every day. So its all relative. And since watches are a hobby i can only see myself buy more than one after financial freedom and stability is achieved.

Well I am very lucky I have a wife and a lot of watches, so I am still not sure what you are trying to get at. It is all relative as each persons situation is vastly different.

Its a luxury item, so I would assume that most here would spend disposable dollars at their own discretion. A months salary to some might be a years salary to others.

I have spent a months pay on a watch twice now. I saved and paid cash, that is the trick.

Cheers,

I would say a rule of thumb would be no more then 10-15% of your savings.

If I have extra cash floating around it is not a big deal however I seldom break it down into months/income/savings. In fact savings is not my forte.

My Wife, does not care about watches coming or going (as long as they are not hers lol) She is set on her collection and does not want anything watch related anymore.

I'm older and have saved well. I guess I could buy just about any watch out there, but have found my niche with Rolex. Even if I was a billionaire I could not justify wearing a watch worth several hundred thousand dollars to myself. I guess it is all relevant, as many consider a Rolex as excessive or overly extravagant.

Life is short, if you are meeting all your obligations, no matter what they are, and you have the means to buy a luxury watch... Then do so... In a hundred years will anyone care?

I have a wife and 4 kids, so every cent counts, I love watches and I am fortunate to have some of the watches I always wanted to have but everytime I want to buy a new one I have to think it a lot and it has to be worth a lot , not in terms of $ but in terms that I really love it and want it.

Its just money you can wear. Most Rolex models at least are very easy to unload if necessary. Although I would never advise someone to have all their eggs in one basket if you know what I mean.

I work 8 Saturdays a year to pay for my watches. Some years that is enough to purchase a new Rolex, some times I have to skip a year or two. Depends upon the watch that I have my sights set on.

I think it's all relative.

If you rent your home and don't have a lot of spare money laying around, have no retirement fund set up and really don't have a "future" but you spend even $5k on a watch with money that you saved for months or years, I think your priorities are very out of line.

On the other hand, if you own a home, have stocks/annuities/etc for the future, have a job where you are only moving up, then who cares as long as it doesn't drain you to buy the piece.

I live part time in Los Angeles. I see kids driving $100k Porsches and then parking them in the driveway of their apartment that they share with 5 other friends. Or guys that work in retail but manage to spend $700/month on their BMW lease. It's crazy IMO.

Would you spend one month's income on a watch? How about a years?

There are so many possible answers that I don't think that I have a great way to answer.

But my starting point was a huge bonus for turning around a division of a 3 initialed global network provider...that enabled the first Rolex. Since then it's been flipping for minor gains - and yes some setbacks. By putting the gains to work I have been able to wear dozens of others while I wanted to.

So I believe anyone who can get their first Rolex, and has a desire to wear as many as they'd like, can do the same thing. Therefore one doesn't have to spend a month's income or more per watch.

But my method wasn't to build a large collection. Never had more than 4 at any one time.

Years? No way.
I might be crazy about watches but watches are not the be all, end all.
But I am crazy enough to take a look at flipping both mine for a Smurf or something along those lines

Rediculous question. People spend money on all different things. I know millionaires driving Hondas. There is no rule or right answer. Just be responsible and pay your bills!

I've never made any pretense toward being rich and yes, I have several watches that cost a month's pay and more, way more.
