RG Novelty vs Schumi RG

Just curious what you all prefer. Two of my favorite RG APs for sure.

RG Shumi. The cermet bezel is dazzling.

Curious as to what factors you would include in that to make the novelty more appealing overall? Factoring in difference in price (~30k), wearability, and versatility?

yep~
Novelty is easier to match with different strap colours and rubber/leather options, not so for schumi...
schumi dial is harder to read
Lastly the price factor

I actually prefer the RG novelty. Just a cleaner, bolder look. I prefer the black to the gray, which can look a little dull or washed out and the absence of the 7 stars makes the dial less cluttered. Plus, I'd never buy an AP LE unless it was really unique or spectacular at this point. They depreciate steadily these days.

Schumi of course... However have seen them list for more than twice the price at which you can get an RG novelty these days

Schumi is a hot watch but I chose the RG Novelty as when it came down to it the price difference wasn't justified IMHO. For the money the RG Novelty is very hard to beat. Dollar for dollar it is the best AP in my book and best overall sports watch. The Schumi is nice but not $40K more nice - so Novelty for the big 44 win!

The detail of the dial on the RG Shumi is the best I've seen. The RG 44 I find boring. The price difference of 40K is tough to swallow but as we all know that's the price of admission to most AP LE Gold pieces.

And I like making ribs on my smoker, but that also has nothing to do with the OP.

I'd go with the Nov due to price and preference of the black dial/strap.

Love the Schumi but not sure about the price diff. I think in that position I would pick the awesome 44 + something really nice (such as the GP with a ceramic bezel) with some cash to spare instead.

Agree, for the price the Schumi should be perfect for you but has a couple of things I don't like so much such as the gimmicky colours on the dial and the overlarge pushers, so the Novelty would be my choice.

I like the grays, but it's kind of a hot color in fashion right now and not one I think will last. Black and gold is timeless. Gold and the Schumi gray-ish isn't something I think I'd appreciate in 5 years.

This More of a 'special' piece.

Dollar for dollar the Novelty is a better buy. Money aside, I would take the Schumi....and I do NOT like commemorative pieces that are issued for idividuals (athletes, etc...) Schumi and Barichello are the only two exceptions to that personal bias.

Yeah, the RB2 in RG is my favorite non-tourb AP.

If price wasn't a factor, the Schumi in RG wins, IMO...and I love the 44RG! I wanted to love the Schumi in Ti, but it was just a bit too all grey for me, the RG gives it the contrast it really needs.

Agree with Marciano though...RB2...now we're talking!

I kinda figured the poll would end up favoring the novelty. I actually have one on the way and it should be here in a couple of days. However I've been browsing the Schumi thread and the excellent pictures of it that have been posted, and can't help but want the RG Schumi. For me it's probably the coolest AP excluding their tourbillon models. Problem is as Ken and others have already mentioned is that there's a 35-40k difference in price (pretty much double the RG novelty price) for different aesthetics and usage of cermet instead of ceramic. So I guess I'm considering whether or not to upgrade my novelty down the road to a Schumi or not haha. But I guess I should probably wait until I've received and worn the watch

Btw, could people elaborate on what makes the rb2 special to them? It's a model that I've heard so much praise on and have seen countless pictures of but have never seen in person and hasn't really "sung" to me as much as the Schumi has.

As with anything, you need to have them on the wrist vs. pics. For example, some pics of the Schumi in Ti looks awesome, but on my wrist, it just didn't speak to me...but it's likely bc I'm not a huge grey dial person.

To answer your question, for me, RB2 and Schumi are both great, but the RB2 is the original king daddy F1 ROO. More importantly, when you compare what makes them special, I think the RB2 has more unique design elements not found on other ROOs. The cutaway dial, vented ceramic bezel, pushers, crown, are all unique to the RB2. Can't go wrong with either though!

A lot of it, of course, comes down to the ol' de gustibus, but the RGRB just comes off cleaner and more appealing with the white dial and skeletonization. Plus, I feel the Schumi, despite being an LE is just a variation on a theme started by the RB's and then reiterated through the Grand Prix, the novelty and even the blech LeBron. You have very slight repackagings of the same aesthetic passed tied in to F1 drivers (which does nothing for me) and then sold at a huge markup that has eventually led to great depreciation in other models. The RGGP was 55-56k on the gray market just 2-3 years ago. A couple months ago I was offered one at 48k, mint. Schumi is hot now, but I bet in a couple years they'll be in the low 60s. The novelty holds steady, and, like I said, I think has a better, cleaner and more timeless look.
