Now here's something you don't see everyday!!

Hi guys,

Whilst carrying on with my job at the museum this morning, came across this very old Marine Chronometer (dates back to 1842-1844).

Marine chronometer with silvered dial and complete with mahogany lockable case (Gimbal Mounts) and mahogany outer carry case with leather strap. Key attached.

Great piece of history and a superb Chronometer to boot. Still in pristine condition and working too....after over 160 years!!!

The outer and inner box are made of solid mahogany wood. Superb brass fittings and a dial which has been untouched for over 1½ centuries. Superb and very, very priceless!!

1. Outer and inner boxes...

2. Inner box containing Chronometer mounted on Gimbals...

Brass ship's chronometer with silvered dial and complete with mahogany lockable case (Gimbal Mounts) and mahogany outer carry case with leather strap. Key attached.

3. Inner box opened up to reveal the beautiful Chronometer...

4. Chronometer dial up close and personal...

5. Those are my gloved hands trying to hold the gimbal-mounted chronometer with the left hand whilst trying to take a picture with my right!!

Thats very nice JJ thats looks like a two day marine chronometer
from the 1840s quite rare the 2707 is like the date serial
They are now quite valuable about £5500 -£6000 retail. And a fine
London maker its a pity it has lost so much of its original lacquer
When new it would have looked almost like if it was rose gold, very nice mahogany brass bound case, just love those blued hand wish it was mine. Are there any engravings on back plate,if it could be linked to a famous ship the value would increase. And its great to see it complete with outer box.Seeing that has made my day, would rather have that, than any modern day Rolex.

Great piece of history, JJ. And a real work of art. Thanks for sharing those pics with us.

Do you know the story behind the watch? What ship was it on? That could be interesting.

The ship was the SS Sheep Stalker. It delivered the first batch of Kiwi's ever to NZ. Turns out, the crew was so infatuated with the indigenous animals of the place that they stayed and never returned to port.
On a brighter note, Ed. It was reported to have had a huge orange mainsail

JJ, thank you very much for these pictures. This is one of my dreams, to own a deck chronometer. As Peter said, very expensive now. There are Russian one's to be had, not that old but still all brass and with the boxes. Even those are becoming more and more expensive (Bloody yuppies ).

Excellent questions, Ed. And I wish I had answers to all of them just so I could fill in the "Brief History" section on that artefact under the Vernon Database that we use in our daily work.

Unfortuanately, I have none of those answers...in fact don't even know who the donor was (was donated in 1982), or else I could have contacted them for a bit of history.

We have a number of very interesting and rare artefacts in our museum. In the past, things at the museum were not run in a professional, disciplined manner, so quite a few of the good artefacts were either stolen or lost.

Things are now much better with the advent of our new Vernon programme and a better check and control over the artefacts.

I hope the ship sank with it's sail after they removed the clock.

I can verify that, having been to JJ's place of work. The most unusual artifact was this bald guy that was "Older than Yoda" based on the plaque beside the display.......

They've changed that plaque now, Al....given it a bit more flash and stylised the writing on it!!

I'm LOL at that one!

Was JJ's display set up before or after Cro-Magnum Man?

JJ, I'll take it. How much do you want for it? It will go nicely with my collection of 200 year old octants.

Not for sale, David....that's a very rare and unique artefact that does the museum proud. We have a number of old and rare artefacts, especially some really old cameras...in fact, when cameras were first introduced to the world going back to the 19th century.

If you guys are interested, I could start up a thread on vintage cameras from such great companies like Thornton-Pickard, Century Camea Co. and J. Lancaster...as well as Kodak from Rochester, N.Y.
