Medal hope crashes out of Olympics
How sad... from CBC:
Canadian skier Allison Forsyth suffered a torn knee ligament in a crash during Monday's Olympic downhill training runs at San Sicario, Italy. Forsyth, from Nanaimo, B.C., lost control of her left ski and grabbed her left knee as she skidded across the course into the protective fencing. Canadian officials told CBC Sports that she tore an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), a potentially career-threatening injury that takes six to eight months to heal. "This is a devastating blow to our team," acknowledged Max Gartner, Alpine Canada's chief athletic officer. "Allison has been preparing for this Olympics really hard. "I know she is going to be devastated. I feel really bad for her." Forsyth, a veteran of the Canadian alpine team, is a slalom specialist, but chose to compete in the Olympic downhill as well. The 27-year-old was headed for a sixth-place finish when she fell. "She attacked the course really well," Gartner said. "She caught an edge and it almost looked like she was recovering." Forsyth was taken down the hill on a toboggan and airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Turin, where an MRI test confirmed the injury. She is expected to return to Canada for surgery. Defending champion Carole Montillet-Carles of France and American contender Lindsey Kildow sustained injuries in crashes too. A fourth skier, Austrian Elisabeth Goergl, also wiped out but was unhurt. "It's the Olympics," Canadian skier Emily Brydon said. "People are trying to take more chances." "There's just a lot of rolls, anything can happen," American skier Julia Mancuso said of the Monte Fraiteve course, which was re-designed because skiers complained last year that it wasn't challenging enough. Montillet-Carles, 32, crashed following a jump. She smashed into the fencing, landed on her back and slammed head-first into the snow. Details of her condition were not immediately available, but she appeared conscious when transported to the clinic located at the athletes' village in Sestriere. Kildow, 21, was the eighth skier to follow Montillet-Carles and lost control as she turned around a gate on a flat stretch. When Kildow's left ski slid out, her right knee buckled and she went airborne for 15 feet before landing hard on her back and slamming her head. Writhing in pain as medical personnel rushed to her aid, she later was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Turin, where U.S. Alpine physician revealed she suffered a severely bruised left hip. "She has no other significant injuries and has not ruled out competing in these Games," he said. I've known her for 10 years, and she's a very tough young lady." Martina Schild of Switzerland was fastest on Monday, clocking one minute, 55.52 seconds, followed by Austrian veterans Renate Goetschl (1:56.28) and Alexandra Meissnitzer (1:56.42). The women's Olympic downhill goes Wednesday. with files from CP Online |

There have been numerous complaints about the conditions there. Yesterday several complaints were made about the ice conditions of the speed skating rink.

I see at on point Great Britain were in the gold medal position for the men's downhill. It lasted until the third skier went down and then we slipped to the silver position. Fighting hard we held on to the bronze medal position until the fifth skier had done his run. Maybe one day.

Ah yes, the UK is world renown for their alpine skiing prowess... sadly in Canadian resorts that renown means bad ski fashion, bad ski technique, loud drunkiness and bad tippers. Quite a legacy! But Adrian is right... for a brief shining moment, the UK was in medal contention. |

Who? Oh the bespeckled knob who placed last? And then went on to (poorly) race trucks in the UK. Yeah I remember him. Maybe he can be on one of those 'celebrity reality' shows.... just for PADI. |

you never know what may happen.
Remember that speed skater from the 2002 Olympics. I believe he was from Seattle area. He was running 4th or 5th, everyone in from on him wiped out & he passed them to win the Gold. This is sports.

We have two locals competing in the local olympics. Erin Hamlin is currently 17th out of 30 in the women's luge after her first two runs today. She's about three seconds off the lead. Not bad for a 17 yr old
In Men's Ice Hocey, we have Robert Esche, a goalie for thr Philidelphia Flyers. I think he is going to be a a backup to Rick DiPietro.

Isn't Esche the guy with the back of his neck burnt from all those red Lights.
I was going to go to Turin to check out the Olympics, so I asked a local where the good red light districts were. He said he could get me some tickets behind the US goal for some hockey games.

Remeber back in the Broad Street Bully days.
I was at the TWO Canuck- Flyer games when the Flyers went ape Shyte & went into the stands after some fans. Wild games. & they were my favorite team for years. ( remember the Flyers/Sabres Playoffs when the ice fogged up and there were guys skating around with blankets trying to dissipate the fog???)

Yeah man, the Flyers Sabers series was great, the only bad thing about it was that Barnaby came out of it with some teeth left And the Broad Street Bullies, was Shultzy the man or what if anyone even looked at Bobby Clarke wrong he would beat the sh*t out of them.

Ed Van Impe lives around here.
A buddy of mine plays hockey with him still. Don't even need to bring up the Flyers/Russian game..

BTW Paulie... if you say 'ice hockey' you really look like a noob! Hockey is hockey... any other kind has an adjective in front of it (like girlie field hockey). |

Hockey is the oldest known stick-and-ball game (apart perhaps from Irish hurling, which dates back to pre-historic times). Historical records show that games resembling modern field hockey were played in various ancient civilizations, although it is not possible to know exactly when and where the game began. There are 4,000 year old drawings in Egypt of the game being played. While modern hockey appeared in the mid-18th century in England, primarily in schools, it was not until the first half of the 19th century that hockey became firmly established, the first club being created in 1849 at Blackheath in south-east London.
