What do people mean by 'papers'??
I notice a lot of discussion with regards to box and papers for Rolex watches.
I guess the discussion I am trying to raise is what exactly is meant be 'papers' with regards to adding value to the watch? Having spoken to a few people some consider 'papers' to be the original documentation that accompanied the watch at the time of sale. Others have stated that any documentation (i.e. RSC service card, RSC repair receipt with serial number etc.) are considered 'papers'. So I guess my question is when people see watches for sale that say 'papers' included what are you expecting to get? Does an official RSC document (with the watch serial number) hold less value than the original papers that accompanied the watch? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. |

Either original documents or recent service documents from RSC work for me.

Papers means the warranty paper or (more recently) the plastic card that came with the watch on day of sale. All the other stuff you mention is sometimes referred to as a paper trail.

More knowledgeable members will chime in soon, but the term "papers" refers to the actual papers that used to come with a rolex before the advent of the credit card type documentation. The term papers remained even though the card is now the standard.
It really just means everything that you would get with a watch purchase. Warranty documents, manual, and whatever else was included at the time of the original sale. Service papers just refers to the service documentation that an RSC would provide with a service. Some people value papers highly as they consider it part of a "full set" . I guess it matters more for older watches. I hope that's right. Edit : no one more knowledgeable than a mod in the post above.
