Greetings, and Question(s)!
I'm new (this being my first post), and am inquiring on whether I should settle for a used Rolex, or proceed with my possible foolhardy decision on buying a new Carrera 1887 (Grey Market). The specific watch from Tag Heuer: CAR2A11.BA0799
I keep seeing so much slander towards Tag, and I do really like the way the Carreras look. Everyone has pretty much told me to buy a used Rolex before even thinking about spending $3,200 (not sure if this is even enough money to buy used) on any Tag (unless it's vintage, or a Monaco --which I'm not really that fond of...). I prefer modern looks, sportier than dressy, and prefer bracelets over NATO/Leather. Now, I know most of you will probably have an instant bias towards Rolex (Rolex Forum), but could I get some insight on why? If you couldn't tell already, I'm new to this. I appreciate any information that you can give me to help me decide. I also apologize if my naivety is showing. Thanks! |

Welcome to the forums.
I think tag is for people who don't know anything about watches and due to tags high budget for marketing people who want to buy themselves something nice get tags without really know anything. Please do not waste your money on a tag. I'm not saying you have to get a Rolex. There are many watch company options in the price range I assume you are looking for. Tag has awful resale value and I believe that's pretty important when buying a watch. There are hundreds of reason why not to go with a tag that I can explain but would turn my post into a book. just hang around these forums for a month or two and you'll feel the same way. It will take time for you to understand.

You're right about the forum and Tag, although I'm sure there are exceptions. The piece you're talking about contains the 1887 movement I believe. If you want to read some skepticism check out http://www.calibre11.com/1887-calibre/
Based on your post though I wouldn't consider a used Rolex in your price range. If you were looking for a chrono with watch snob credibility in your price range I'd be thinking Omega Speedmaster man on the moon (manual wind, acrylic crystal). |

I understand the skepticism about the 1887 calibre. I've read many an article about how they said they used 100% in house movements, when in actuality they started with a Seiko base.
I saw the Omega Speedmaster Man on the Moon, and I have to say, I'm not feeling it. I understand it's a timeless watch that is the moon watch. The watch that should belong in every watch collector's collection. It just looks too dated, much like a vintage watch. However, I do like the variations like Dark/Grey Side of the Moon. I also would like Sapphire crystal over Acrylic. I could probably deal with manual over automatic. I was looking at an Omega PO chrono --still a bit more expensive than I'd really like. xD Thanks again for your insight! I definitely will hang around and read. |

I could maybe stretch $550 and get a Omega Seamaster 300m with the chrono (non GMT)... Is the 3330 movement better than Calibre 1887?
Edit: I could also maybe stretch a little further for a non-chrono Planet Ocean for the 8500 movement, if that's better. Also, I REALLY like exhibition case on the back of the PO. I know it's a non-issue when you're wearing it, but, my god... it looks beautiful on a lot of them. |

My humble opinion..buy what you like and want to wear and look at all day..every second/minute of the day.
That said..if you also want to have buyer protection aka ..what can i sell it for in the future if i want to change ..then your options get limited and will always point back to rolex given their innate resale value retention. As others posted..tags cliff dive on resale value as well breitlings etc... As you mention your stretch budget . You are close to 4k. If you prefer rolex and thats what you want ..maybe wait another year ..save another 1500-2k and then you are right in budget for a rolex sports model...mint preowned. And enjoy the shopping process..good luck with your search |

Stretch for the omega if you can and the rolex if you can even better. Both upgrades worth the €ŁĄ$

Never be afraid to buy used from a trusted seller/known bricks and mortar used store. Speedmaster or Rolex are way safer choices and will hold value TAG will not.

I think I will get the Omega PO. I'm not sure whether I want the 42 or 45.5mm. It's a little sad that I won't get a chronograph, it being $1000 more than my already stretched budget, but I also hear that a chrono on a dive watch is completely pointless. I like the feature, but I like the way it looks more.
Hm... I have a 7 and 1/2 wrist, but I have smallish hands. I wish I lived near an AD so I could try some of this stuff on. Would have to go on a road trip... Once again, thanks for the advice! |
