First Rolex- advice needed
Hi everyone.
I'm going to be turning 30 soon and have decided to treat myself to a Rolex to celebrate that. My predicament is that I'm not entirely sure on which to go for. I'm considering the submariner (with date), Milgauss, or explorer II. I obviously want something I'm going to enjoy and like the look of, but I'd also like something which will hold (or maybe even increase!) in value and that I could hand down through the family in the future. Any helpful information or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance guys. |

Welcome to the forum!
You need to try on all on your wanted list and see what feels right and sings to you. Everyone will give their advice but its about what feels right / looks right to you. I was in your position in june. I went to my AD, tried them all on and went with the blnr which is my daily wear. Problem is that 6 months down the line, i want a black face ss daytona to compliment it! Go with your gut, all will be much loved when passed on. Enjoy the chase. |

A TT Blusey will never go out of style! Might be slightly bias though! Dressy enough to pull off with a suit yet good to go on the beach.

In terms of holding value, a Sub would fit. In terms of increasing in value, realistically nothing from the current lineup. I would go check out the Sub and they ExpII and see how they look on the wrist.

Any modern Rolex wouldn't fail to give your the joy and satisfaction. But you gotta ask yourself
Some very basic but practical questions: budget? date or no date? Ratio of dress or spot? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Thanks for the help so far everyone.
To answer some of the questions that have been asked: I'd like something with the date Budget around £5k (aware this will mean looking at used items as well) Would like something a little adaptable to formal/casual so it can be worn regularly. |

I was in a similar position myself last month, I ended up going with the GMT Master Bi-Metal, I wanted something which was eye catching but wasn't too in your face, I wanted some gold to compliment my engagement ring, I couldn't be happier with my choice! Buy what you love and don't look back!

Welcome to the forum and have fun on the journey! Be sure to try on many different models and hopefully one with be the winner. You cannot go wrong with a Sub or Daytona which were my first two purchases.

Very good advice above.
I would suggest a Sub as to me, is the timeless classic! |

Agree with the advice to try on. Like cars, they all look nice new and shiny, but drive/wear a little bit differently.
Put the idea of appreciation out of your head. Unlikely to happen. Also, while I too enjoy the thought of passing down a watch, it's much more prudent to focus on what you want for now, or the next year. After a year drooling over photos on TRF you may be saving for a rosegold skydweller. Happy birthday. |

You can't go wrong with a sub. Those things are timeless in their design.
Truth is, the right answer is the watch that makes you smile more than the rest. Good luck. |

Best thing you can do is go to an AD and really look at a bunch of different models. You will quickly have a short list which is better than no direction at all. Then you can come back to TRF and obsess over the choice like we have all done in the past!

No one has mentioned the Milgauss. How can you go past that green crystal.

That's why the milgauss is one I was thinking about, the green just makes it look at little different, and you don't tend to see as many around.

I'm picking up my milgauss this Friday. I have a DJ 1501 that I'm having overhauled. Personally, date isn't too important to me, especially since I always have my phone on me and I can check the date reasonably quickly. You can't go wrong with a Sub, but everyone and their moms have them, I even seen females wearing them recently. I like the milgauss because of the colors and because its something that you dont see everyday. And its a timepiece that I always thought it was a cool watch.
At the end of the day, its up to you. |

I had and traded/sold:
Sub no date (2003), Sub date(2004 M series), Yacht Master 2 tones (2006), Sub Bluessy, GMT II Anniversary (ceramic) S/S (2008), GMT II coke, Sub-date green 50 Anniversary, Ceramic Sub-date that I sold to fund my Date Just II Gold/SS with diamonds. I keep: Date Just II Gold/SS with ivory diamond dial and got the Ceramic Sub/date SS new again. If I have to keep one Rolex watch only, it will be the Sub date SS.

The 3 watches are 3 totally different animals, different style, different size, different color. Which style do you like ? which style fits your personality/lifestyle ?
If you want to buy a Rolex because you just want a "ROLEX", not that you particularly like a certain watch /look. Then may be you should hold-on on the purchase, because later on when you finally figure out what you want, you will probably regret your decision today. |
