Ebay is not so very very bad

Long story short I bought a Root Beer 1675 from a guy who claimed it was 100% authentic and fully functional.

Got the watch today.

The bezel is stuck in place and does not move, the crystal is obviously aftermarket and has a terrible polish job.

Since I only had the watch two hours I figure the guy will be reasonable. I offered to pay for the return shipping as well.

His response was that he won't accept a return based on "Buyer's remorse" but offered to get the bezel fixed for $100 at Rolex NY....riiiiiight.

Oh and his reason for the broken bezel not being in the listing description was:

"I haven't turned the bezel in years!"

There's a lot of idiots out there.

I opened a case with paypal and they've put a hold on the funds.

The guy calls me up and tells me he has 32 rolexes and that I'm gonna lose the paypal case.

Word to the wise, if it seems too good to be true don't pull the trigger.

I'll be sticking to Local Dealers, TRF trusted sellers and Crown & Caliber from now on.

Why is this eBay's fault? Post a link to the listing, let's have a look at it.

Can't you file a charge back with your credit card. My AMX is linked to my PayPal is why I'm asking. They've been good with any issues

It's not Ebay's fault, it's my own for not being more careful. What I mean to say is that Ebay is not as trustworthy as these forums.

So your upset over a stuck bezel? This is nothing earth shattering at all. Easy fix. he also stated the crystal had been replaced.

Is this price you paid considered cheap for what it is? I'm genuinely unsure. Just going off your too good to be true comment.

If he said this is 100% authentic and you find out that the crystal isn't genuine Rolex then I guess you have a case to return it. Have you verified this is so?

I'm taking it to my friends at ABC watchwerks to verify the watch's authenticity.

In regards to the stuck bezel I think it's definitely something a seller should disclose in their listing, in my opinion.

For sure. There are only so many functions one can do with a watch - turning the bezel being one of them. Don't quite believe he hadn't done that prior to listing it for sale.

So in regards to a charge back through AMEX should I just go for it? I haven't returned the watch yet and definitely don't want to get burned if I ship back the watch and still get charged for it.

No, it sounds like you came in guns blazing and pissed the seller off literally over a stuck bezel to where he did not want to work with you. Something that should have been disclosed, but not a big deal at all.

You should try to work this out with the seller before charging it back on your credit card. At the end of the day you still have his $4000+ watch if you get the money back; that's theft.

Thanks for advice guys, I'm going to get an expert opinion on the authenticity of the watch and I'll decide what to from there.

The seller unfortunately has been quite rude and phoned me trying to scare me out of pursuing a refund. I really don't trust a guy who claims to have never touched the bezel on a GMT as the reason for it being left out of the listing description.

All in all this has been an unfortunate experience for both of us, but I've learned a valuable lesson in the process.

Merry Christmas guys and thanks again

To be fair, he does say the crystal was replaced, and he says it keeps perfect time, but nothing said about fully functional in every other way.

He's only sold one other Rolex... Who knows, maybe it's just a watch to him and the GMT function is just a pretty arrow, or he expects the bezel to work like an Explorer 2?

You have his watch and his money. I would be terse with you too if you were expecting me to be patient while you sorted everything out at your own pace. Since you have doubts, return the watch and move on to the next deal.

Never try to fix or repair something from Ebay that isn't right. Always just return the whole thing straight away for full refund.

FWIW I've never bought any bad or not as described Rolex watches or parts from Ebay (and I've had a fair few) but HAVE bought from so called trusted sellers on HERE that have been less than open and honest in their descriptions.

Case is opened with PayPal. He should do what PayPal says. In few days PayPal will instruct him to send the watch back. Right now no one has the money. Only PayPal does. Once he returns the watch then he will get his money back.

I can understand being slightly upset about the stuck bezel but other than that all looks like it was described properly in the listing. The case has clearly been polished a few times.

As mentioned, follow Paypal instructions before you take to ABC.

You could, however, verify serial and model number - hopefully legible!

There was an overlap with the 1675 and 16753 during that year period.

My 9411 is stuck but has the original insert so I'm actually happy they didn't try to "fix" it prior to listing on eBay...

It is absolutely a mine field out there but sure and careful steps ensure you keep your limbs.

Sorry OP but clearly you are a bad buyer in this case. Item 100% as described from what I can see and you have buyers remorse, his money, his watch, and ruining his holidays in the process lol.

Watches are just that, a watch, to most people and he described it to his best ability. The bezel is no big deal at all and he offered to fix it for well over cost.

You failed to read the description carefully and look closely at the pics. Just follow paypal's instructions from here though. In the mean time, he's hoping you're not scamming him by getting his watch, his money, and returning him a fake Rolex.

And just for giggles I'll add that the bezel on the watch I'm wearing (Sub date 16610) is basically stuck. Probably loaded with dirt/grime. But I'll take it off and clean it Sometime. Never play around with it so honestly didn't know for a most likely a long time since it worked last time I tried it prior to realizing it.

I'll say that I probably only move my bezel around at the most once a month too, if that at all. But in saying that prior to listing a watch for sale I would check it.

Alright folks here's the update:

Took the watch to ABC watchwerks.

The bezel insert is aftermarket.

The bezel itself is stuck.

The bracelet is a 14k jubilee.

The clasp is from a datejust.

When I brought all this up to the seller he threatened to sue me...

I shipped the watch back with fedex today and videotaped them packing the watch and getting it ready for shipment.

I agree that I should have done more due diligence before purchase but at the end of the day I went in for a stuck bezel and suspicions about the crystal and found out that the watch is a frankenwatch with a fake insert.

Everything should work out fine, and I will be much more careful in the future.

Is that what PayPal instructed you to do? I hope the next post is not PayPal decided in favor of the seller and now you are out the watch and money.

So a learning moment worth sharing - the seller offered a watch and some details weren't disclosed.

The buyer has some responsibility to ask more questions particularly on a vintage Rolex.

Like is it all original to the 1675?
Is he the original owner?
What has been replaced?
What is the documented service history?

eBay is not the problem - "iffy" or sketchy or clueless sellers and careless buyers are the root cause of most problems in many deals.

You are fortunate he had a return policy.
