Vintage GMT - Circa 1960
I wrote a long and detailed post but it had an error message, so this is going to be much shorter.
I inherited the attached GMT from my dad. I'm not looking to validate the watch is genuine, I already know that. To the point: The very last service was not done by an authorized Rolex service center. Is it true they will not touch a watch that has been previously "cannibalized"? I want to get it as close to original as possible, including a new/used bracelet that is era correct. Where is the best place, Ebay and say a few Hail Mary's? I have absolutely NO plans to sell this watch. The quick change for the date no longer works and Rolex didn't have parts the last time they worked on the watch. Doesn’t bother me that much. I also don’t think the Acrylic is an original. If the country this was serviced in closed their remaining service center, would those records have been sent to Switzerland? If I were to send Rolex my dad’s particulars, could they trace his service history? If the post gets in interest I would be happy to supply more info. Thanks. |

That is Pointed Crown Guard case and being from 60's it will not have the quick set date. The first three numbers from the serial will give you year and you can then decide what bracelet it will require. Rolex do not give out history but you could write and ask it will not hurt. The only other thing that is not correct is the insert it should be a fat font one. Hope this helps. You would be best to keep an eye out on here and VRM.

The watch is stunning, beautiful condition.
Ebay is a fine source for bracelets - I just purchased an older Jubilee for a mid 60s GMT. There is a website called http://www.gmtmasterhistory.com/ Good resource for older GMT information. As long as the watch is running well, I wouldn't be terribly concerned about tracing it's history. Rolex isn't like a medical record - so I wouldn't anticipate a very good trail going back to 1960. Just enjoy it! And think about insuring it... |

Beautiful watch. There are a few watchmakers out there that enjoy working on these vintage watches. I am confident that quick change can be repaired in the right hands.
Again, lovely watch. Phillip Ridley, CW21 |

nice 1675, period inserts are pricey and that one looks good. I'd wear it on strap or bracelet. I like them on a jubilee but a 7206 oyster is good too. If you have serviced ask for some recommendations for good "vintage" watchmakers. Scratch that dial or knock off the lume and values plummet.
And as said that is a slow set movement, no quick change feature. Last edited by watchcrank; 6 January 2016 at 06:59 AM.. Reason: addition |

I took him referring to "quick change" as the date snapping or clicking quickly, versus the date slowly moving forward. |

The insert is very nice, but not correct for the mid-1960s. It appears to be a service insert or possibly late 1970s. If it is a red back, it is probably late 1970s. Blue backs are from the early 1980s on up. A super fat font would be very nice and correct.

Beautiful GMT.
I agree the insert does look nice, but I would look for a nice fat font insert for it. It will be expensive, but will restore it back to its original look. They can be found here and on other forums. Same for the bracelet, a 7206 would look great on that watch. I found one last year on a sister forum and then sent it to Michael Young for a full restoration. Looks and wears brand new now. Well worth the cost. You can also find a plexi on the forums. I personally avoid ebay for most Rolex parts, too many aftermarket parts being sold for genuine money and some of the parts it is really hard to tell in pictures. Congrats on a really rare and cool watch. |
