My intended wedding attire faux pas
Gents, the bottom line is I screwed up.
I am getting married on Saturday (no, that's NOT the screw-up😛 - that part I am excited about), and wearing a dinner jacket. I was planning to wear either my great-grandfather's pocket watch with my tuxedo, or none at all. I know and appreciate the rules or customs on that issue. However, I recently returned from vacation in Florida, during which I spent considerable time in the sun...wearing my ceramic Sea-Dweller. The presence of tan lines on my wrist would look terrible in pictures. Poor planning on my part, really, but at this point, there isn't much I can do about it. I've jettisoned all my dress watches over the last three years, as I tended not to wear them. So, I have left myself with several less-than-ideal options, but declining to wear a watch on Saturday is a particularly bad one, given the amount of sun I got in Fort Myers. So, the question presented is not "is it ok to wear a wristwatch of any kind, much less a sports piece, with a tuxedo," since I know the answer to the latter part is a resounding "no." The event's not formal - it's outdoors, in New Orleans, and I'll be the only one wearing a dinner jacket. The question really is given that I am likely going to disregard the rules for the aforementioned reason, which option is best amongst the bad choices? My white Daytona or sub 14060m seem like decent options, given the above. Both fit fine under my shirt cuff. The sea-dwellers, GMTs, and Hulk are out. Anyone else committed such an egregious misstep and been ok with the result? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I wouldn't worry about the tan lines, but if you want to wear a watch, you don't need permission from anyone with the possible exception of your bride.

Wear whatever you like.
The last time anyone said anything to me about a watch tan line was my teen age son about 15 years ago.

If you get ur wrist spray tanned today, you'll be fine Saturday, and that pocket watch will be quite nice.

You raise an excellent point, and I did seek approval from MGMT. She likes both pieces and doesn't think either would detract from the occasion. Besides, when everyone sees her, not a soul will be looking at me! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Wear the Daytona because it'll look good and not to hide a tan line. No one will care about a tan line so go with the pocket watch if you wish to honor tradition. Or like Samui said, go buy a new dress watch. There's a thread floating around here about appropriate watches for a tux... thin case, black leather band.

I'd vote this as well...go to the store or jump on Amazon for some spray on tanner...buying a dress watch works, but only if you already know what you want and are able to find a decent deal on it.

I think those formal dress rules have kind of gone out the window.
Your cuffs should hide your tan line I would think. So I would stick with your plan of wearing your grandfather's pocket watch. It will mean more. |

Wear whatever you want! FWIW, all eyes will be on your soon to be wife and only a discerning WIS would be looking at your wrist. Even if a wrist tan line shows up in pictures, your photographer can easily take care of that while post processing your wedding photos
Early Congratulations |

Wear whatever you want, its your wedding. I wore my Daytona on my wedding day.
Part of the reason I enjoy this hobby is because of these moments. I wore the Daytona on the day my son was born as well. Makes it that more special to me. |

I'm wearing a navy tuxedo with black lapels, bow tie, and shoes at my wedding next year. You can be certain my BLNR will be on my wrist.

Bond wore a Submariner on an 18mm NATO.
I don't see the problem. :) |

I would wear the pocket watch with a nice gold chain and fob, You will look sharp and the chain and fob will stand out in all the wedding photo's plus a great remembrance of your Great-Grandfather. I do this from time to time and get great compliments.
Good Luck and Congratulations. If the watch is silver it would be nice to use a silver chain. |

I would think if your formal shirt fits properly, your cuff should cover any tan line. Problem solved.

Unless you were on a nudist beach soaking up the rays down in sunny Florida, I'd prepare the good lady to be aware of the shock of tan lines of those skinny speedos you were wearing before the nuptials get started, it could ruin the occasion and set you back years. Just putting some perspective on the wrist issue. Hope you get it sorted either way, good luck.
