First rolex, don't know what to get
I'm thinking of getting a rolex within the next week but I'm having trouble deciding which one to get. At first I was choosing between the black sub or the black GMT, since I wanted a more casual sporty kind of watch since I already have an IWC portofino on leather strap, and was thinking of getting the rolex and changing it to a rubber strap. But recently I saw some pictures of the Date just and thought that it looked really nice. So now I'm really conflicted on which one to get I'm also in my early 20's so quite young, so I want a nice casual rolex where I can wear with pretty much anything, and I'll keep my portofino for more dressy and formal occasions. Any ideas on which one to get?

Don't get it within the next week, whatever it is, if you can avoid it. Take your time and learn about the various models. Narrow it down to a few, then try them on. At least.

This said, my first Rolex when I was your age was a no date Submariner, just loved it. Enjoy the experience of finding the right one for you! Oh! And welcome to the forum, I reckon from now on you will spend some time around here.

Chaps
The best advice is always take your time, be boring and spend lots of time googling the various models and then wait again. The thrill of the hunt etc always applies. For a young man in his twenties, I would have thought an Explorer 2 is the first model to look at. It looks a young mans watch. Regards Mick |

Check the 116710 and look for 16570 polar. Try those. Great first time pieces, but try on what ever calls to you and check it out until your sure
Goid luck

+10 on taking your time. You are looking for new or used? If used some sellers have return policies that can help if you don't like the watch, same applies to some online stores with generous return policies. Good luck and let us know what you finally buy!

I agree with Adam. Take your time, do your research and some soul-searching. The models you're looking for will be there next week, next month and next year.
When I was doing my research on my first model, I had it narrowed down to a few options. I watched a lot of YouTube videos and read a lot of opinions on this forum. That really helped solidify my decision. With already having a dressy watch in your collection, I would look to something more sporty. Just a thought for ya. Happy hunting! |

Some good advice of the guys here..... I myself spent the last few deciding on what I wanted. Between GMT master and subs I had tried them all on . And then went away to thought about what was best .
I actually bought my first Rolex yesterday and ended up with a SS Daytona with black face. |

agree with taking time though, try on every watch then go home and think about it, then try them all on again after a few days, don't rush or be fooled by sales tactics

I think your initial instincts were spot on, gmt and sub are great for the use you describe. I'd lean gmt. Of course if you want to go for it and really contrast the iwc, Hulk. I do also like plan c, 42mm exp2

I strongly dislike ANY Rolex on a Rubber Strap.....
But I "DO" like this IWC Aquatimer on one. You apparently already like IWC, (so do I), so why not consider this one? In the past I've thought about dumping my Rolexes and getting a pair of IWC's.....but LOVE my 42mm Explorer-II's so much I won't be. I just think IWC's are as cool as it gets.... |

Get a sub or an explorer1. Go to the AD and try on every model you can. That'll give you a pretty good idea. The best for that casual everyday you're looking for would be those two though.

I would recommend Sub (date or no date) or GMT. Go try them and get the one you like the best.
If you want more color, you can go with SUB LV or GMT BLNR. Yachtmaster blue dial is nice too. Good Luck

I would agree to add the explorer line to the list of watches to try on. To me it bridges the gap between the pure sport watches and the DJs.

the classic SS/18K Datejust looked a tad too conservative at the time & I opted out of the Daytona because I was told by the AD that it can be an expensive model to service due to its multiple movements. he then showed me the Explorer II & I was sold...it looked a little different than the other Rolex models & from what I learned later, wasn't a particularly popular or big-seller at the time. while this wasn't a 'spur of the moment' or compulsive purchase, I did buy the watch on the first go 'round & still have it today...in retrospect, no regrets. |

I hate the hunt. I find it, I buy it. Some people are not cut out for waiting or kicking the tires. Can't blame the OP for his haste. I would suggest your standard submariner with date in stainless with black insert and dial. I also like the cyclops too on the date......IF you wanted something more professional you can't go wrong with a datejust.
