Gold Plated Rolex

Here's the thing

My grail watch is an everose day date with a diamond meteorite dial. Talking to my friendly jeweler he can take a yellow gold 1803 or 18238 and get it rose gold plated, the plating would last.

So, the watch would still be 18ct gold and a meteorite dial would set me back probably £5 - £700 - result.

I am talking here about what I want and it would be a keeper so not really bothered about resale etc. My question is how would Rolex / AD view it for a service? Obviously it would all be Rolex - just different.

Thanks for your time

Doubtful RSC would service it. Gold plating is of for a Michael Kors...but not a Daytona!!!

Why not just get a RG day date and add a meteorite dial?

Bad idea. It would be worth little.

Agree with getting a RG case and change the dial. More reversible than plating it in case they don't do a good job with the plating.

Yes this is what I would do. Plus RSC won't service it or if you are lucky they might do so only after they revert it back to YG and for a fee.

A Modest Proposal: Defenestration for anyone who henceforth types "Gold Plated Rolex" in this forum.

I'd take a gold-plated 5500.

OP, I really recommend against this. Rolex meteorite dials and diamond-setting are miles ahead of aftermarket quality. It's not going to look as good as a true meteorite 118205/118235 (which is an aspirational piece for me as well).

Or get the rare solid gold 5500. Now that's a piece to own! I've only seen a couple

Please DO NOT gold plate your Rolex. They sell them in all variations of gold already.

Ever since I lost out on the prototype 5500, it just hasn't been the same.

At 9k, not a ton of gold in them but boy are they nice. They came on those funky bracelets too

The members on this forum are generally open to what choices people make for themselves: their taste, their watch, their money. But in this case an intervention may be necessary. Sometimes people need to be saved from themselves.

To answer your question, I guess there's a very remote possibility RSC might service it, but if they did you would get it back in factory condition with the plating polished off.

Point taken!

I had no idea there existed vintage gold plated and also 9ct Air Kings. Learned something new today. Thanks!
