How to decide
How to decide when you have only seen a watch online?
I am very close to purchasing a DSSD, it will be my first Rolex. I first saw online the D-Blue special edition and though how awesome it looked. I've since tried on the black dial. This confirmed I like the size and weight and it was the watch for me. I've been researching a lot about the watch and have seen endless pictures of both dials. In this time I feel I have grown to prefer the black dial. I'm not sure if I'm accepting the black dial given the difficulty in finding the D-Blue at an AD or not. Pro's for me for the black dial: Classy look, looks good with a range of rubber straps, timeless style, Pro's for the D-Blue: Unique, talking point, rarer Pro/Con: Dial can be modified for a D-Blue look (this is also a concern in buying a watch privately) I have read a lot that the D-Blue is stunning in person. I'd love to have both in front of me so I can make a call, but if that's not an option, or a very unlikely option, what do you do? Keen to hear toher peoples experiences and opinions. PS. In before people say buy both. |

I've handled the Deep Blue at an AD, and my initial impression was the blue dial and green writing were very understated. From a foot away hard to tell the difference between the two. Since you like the size and weight of the watch, that's most of the battle right there. Another con of the D Blue is the price- you can easily find used black faced dssds around 8k USD, but d blue is still around 12k. That's a big difference.

Go with D-Blue, I did, can't say I regret it for a second.
Just to think that I have a watch people could be waiting in line for months to get. That makes me feel special :) |

I think in your case would buy the black one if the price difference is so big as stated above. ($4k to me means a second Rolex watch)

If you're buying it as your only Rolex I'd go for the Deep Blue. I've owned 3 DSSD's since they were introduced in 2008 and will be keeping the Deep Blue for the reasons you've stated.
In the secondary market you can get a black dial for about $4k less than the DB as there are fewer to be had and it's, IMHO, a special watch - price is about the same for brand new. As for the dial being modified to DB from black, I've only seen 1 dial for sale on the forum and the asking price was around $4k....try to find both for a side by side comparison, but go Deep Blue mate as you won't regret it at all!! Good luck in your search!

I went with the black as imo it has a classy original look to it and although the blue is rarer it doesn't matter as I'm not planning on selling it ever. Regardless of which one you get it is really one of the best Rolex ever designed.

I have owned the DSSD and it is a great watch. I have handled the DSSD Blue at an AD and it was OK but not my favorite. The price difference is significant and does not justify a dial difference. Get the black, save $4,000.00, start your fund for your next watch.

I would buy your first choice. After time passes, the price difference will fade. I really prefer the Blue dial version.

Aesthetically only you can decide. I'd definately try on the DSSD before buying though, it's not for everyone due to the size and case height.
Good luck and let us know. |

I have the DSSD black and love that watch. I have tried on the DSSD blue and the only reason I would make a move for that is the rarity of it. Not that I like it anymore, the colors are hard to notice from any distance and to justify the price difference is tough. I want to love the Dblue but the premium is something that I cant justify, the only reason I would do this is to have something of a collectors item. Good luck!

Thank you all for your responses. Some good points to consider in the subtlety of the blue and the potential saving of the black.

Black was the one for me. I flipped it a while back but the classic is the one for me.
