My first Rolex experience, good and bad

Hello,

Im new to this forum, and this is my first post. My apology if anything in this post conflicting forum regulations and such, plus being a newbie in watch :))

I've had some interest in watch and always want to have an automatic watch, mainly to learn more about watch, appreciate 'em and so on. Patek, AP and Rolex are my choice, but having a really small wrist (and savings) which left me with the only 2 options: a SS Sub or GMT. I travel frequently, so I figured a GMT II would be a good beginner watch for me.

So a month ago when wifey had a chance to travel to U.S. and I know that Hong Kong has pretty good price for Rolex, I ask her to go ahead and grab that black GMT on her return flight.

I'm pretty sure we share the same feeling when opening that first expensive automatic watch, IDK if the feeling is still the same with my 2nd watch but it was gooooood. Opening that green wavy box, and seeing that green GMT hand, I was hooked, went on with removing seal, turning that crown to wind the watch. Looking up instruction on how to use an automatic watch and GMT function, it was satisfying . Continuing my habit of giving stuff I like a nickname, I call my watch roro - wifey was laughing so hard when she heard that name and continuing to mock me whenever I leave the house with the " Hey, where's roro" joke.

On the next day I have to look up for RSC in my city to work on the bracelet. It felt amazing when I first put it on my wrist. Im the type of person who walking pretty fast, thus, arms are swinging widely and being violent with roro, which lead to a few bangs on desk, door edge, table, machines.... Fortunately, no big marks or dents up til today yet. That polished center links really bugged me as I hate to see marks on new watch. After a few days adjusting mindset, I finally accepting that marks are unavoidable and it will happen sooner or later.

Owning a Rolex now, I started to have more interest in mechanical watch. I started to learn more and find this forum, with nice and helpful members. Funny thing is, I used to hate Rolex bc where I live, most ppl just buy Rolex bc that's the brand they see everyone wearing and it hold value. However, owning a Rolex now and I love how they strive to become better in a perfectionist mindset.

Thanks for reading this long post. How was your first Rolex experience?

Welcome from another noob and GMT(BLNR) owner!

I'm glad you're so happy with your new watch. In my experience, the excitement and joy when opening a new purchase will not diminish but the desire for more watches will increase many times as you browse this forum!

Good luck!

I love the first Rolex stories. Unlike collectors, the first watch is always a huge milestone and an excitement. It reminds me of my first (and only) Rolex which I got a couple of months back.

Welcome to the dark side! TRF members are great enablers and the knowledge contained here is amazing.
My first and only for now, well the experience was somewhat like yours, I admit to feeling somewhat dizzy as I left the AD after spending so much money on a watch and I'm still in awe when I look at my wrist!

Welcome to the forum. My first Rolex was bought secondhand, so unfortunately, i didn't get that much excitement. But I know what you mean. Enjoy, that's a heck of a first Rolex.

Welcome! Glad to hear your story. You appreciate the watch and are not the person so concerns with others opinions or resale value. You get it.

You are going to enjoy yourself here!

Bienvenido to the forum! My first Rolex experience was amazing. I had just received my college degree; sold a ton of 'youngster' items (audio mostly) and added some savings. A very good friend worked (still does) at local AD and helped me on purchasing my DJ. Love that watch; still own it!!!

A lot of people have a very similar experience with regards to their opinion of Rolex.

First off a lot of folks hate Rolex because it is the one well know “expensive” watch that with all honesty a lot of people just buy to show off.
As a WIS (watch idiot savant) you tend to not want that, you want a watch that shows that you are into watches.

But over time you get over that stigma that is associate with the brand and start to appreciate them for what they are, one hell of a good watch.

Looks like you are ahead of the norm, enjoy roro!!

Great story. My first Rolex (16610) instantly turned me into an admirer. I probably spent more time admiring the watch than trying to find out the time.

Congrats and welcome! I got my first (gmt LN like yours) in January. A few scratches but it still looks awesome. I love mine so much and it brings me so much happiness every time I look at my wrist! I hope you get as much satisfaction and joy from your purchase. Congrats again 👍🏼😁

Yup the reason why they have become the most well known luxury watch is because of its undoubted quality.
