Is Rolex Listening to Customers?

In the past it has seemed that Rolex has done what they deemed appropriate and expected the public to catch up to their aesthetics.

Now suddenly Rolex increases the length of the Explorers hands, which was a big issue with many enthusiasts.

Also, Rolex didn't just slap a ceramic bezel on the SS Daytona, they actually redesigned the dials to make them more legible.

Did Rolex actually take consumer reaction into account or am I dreaming?

Seems like they were quite a bit more in tune with what (at least on this forum) people were asking for. I doubt in past they went in totally blind though.

of course they do. it is a competitive environment. if you dont listen to customer you'll get left behind.

its more about form of use though. the explorer is supposed to be a do all watch. but luming the numbers it is easier read at night.

ceramic bezels are the new standard on SS models. it will only continue. rolex was slow to introduce them and now is full throttle.

Exactly. And maybe with the world's financial problems they need to sell more watches, so giving people what they want is a nice way to accomplish that.

I'd say they did this time around. They hit the Daytona right out of the park.

Well, of course I agree with you in principle, but I can't really think of an instance in the past when their listening seemed so obvious.

Also, my comment about the Daytona wasn't about the bezel, but about the dials.

I agree. Rolex, it seems to me anyway, is listening to not just their customers, but their rabid, loyal, watch geeky customers! The thing about Rolex that I've seen is that they tend to move at an absolute glacial pace. Changes for them come very slowly, primarily due to the fact that they are doing everything in house and have to change their entire factory process to change something in a watch. For example, 41mm Datejusts? Who thought those would go away to be replaced by a 40mm Datejust? But Rolex moves slow so it will be a few years before that change takes place. Just my two cents anyway...

Not sure. The majority on these boards seemed to want the DJII reduced to 39mm, and Rolex has ignored that completely with the DJ41.

Interesting perspective, and I suspect you're right.

I also think that the DJ will shrink a millimeter in the future.

sorry it wasnt 100% addressing you just in general about the ceramic. they started with the gmt 2 which is less popular than both the sub and daytona. now nearly every sport model with a bezel has it (RG yacht-master included). not sure if they would ever do it in the explorer I or II.

subdials have been a gripe for a while so perhaps they are now listening more.

I wasn't speaking solely of the reactions of those on this board, nor did I think that Rolex would respond to every consumer complaint, especially in a single year.

I agree with everyone.

It seemed like they listened to what was constantly being discussed on this forum. The Daytona changes make it look fantastic and an honorable mention goes to the Explorer.

Is Rolex Listening to Customers?

YES. I truly believe Rolex is doing a lot of market research on what new products to release. I also suspect TRF is one of many places they go to take a temperature and get a feel for what their brand loyal customers want!

I agree that they do seem to be listening and giving thought to what enthusiasts are saying. Win win.

Yes, likely so and by reading forums such as this. Support for this statement is that Rolex invited Ariel (ablogtowatch), Jake (rolexmagazine), Benjamin (hodinkee$, and James (timezone) to tour their facilities on late 2013...

How do we know that all of the moderators on the forum aren't Rolex employees?
