You Bought a Pre Owned Rolex without its Box...Would you Source a Rolex Box for it?

Guys,

Just would like to know your opinion on this...

You Bought a Pre Owned Rolex without its Box...Would you Source a Rolex Box for it? Or would you just leave it as it is (without its Box)...?

Are you planning to resell?

To me it depends. If you're thinking you may flip it down the road, then yes get it. Some people like a "complete set" and are willing to pay the few extra hundred $$. However, if you're 100% sure of the authenticity and don't feel you need the box, then save your money. Personally, when I have purchased preowned I always wanted the complete set. I'm sure others will chime in. Congrats on your new watch.

Me? No...I prefer my sales to be "clean" and sell as I got it. If it wasn't with its box, I would not chase another to stick it into. IMO the documentation is more important than a box.

To be honest, it bugs me a bit when I see an obviously older watch listed with a modern box. Makes me wonder what else was done to dress things up.

It depends. If the paperwork i.e warranty card, instruction booklet, etc didnt come with the watch, then don't bother. A watch with only a Rolex box does not make a complete set. A watch with only a box holds no extra value.

Agreed. I prefer full sets myself which includes warranty card etc. otherwise what's the point of the box? Only exception would be for vintage where sourcing a period correct box could have some fun and collector value as well.

If it came with the papers but no box I would. You never know if you decide to sell it.

Excellent advice. For what you'll likely pay for an authentic Rolex box on eBay, you could find a MUCH nicer (higher quality) generic watch box for your collection.

Adds nothing to the value IMO unless it accompanies the original paperwork. Without that, it's just an overpriced green box.

Not sure I would, the boxes are not exactly amazing quality, one of mine is not old and the green where the surfaces meet on closure is worn and I've opened it about 3 times!

I guess you don't 'buy' the box but the watch.

You don't wear the box.

However, it's a personal thing. I believe that many get their cues from Forums such as this one and when they see a lot of members who swear up and down that their watch must be "complete", they begin to think so themselves.

Believe me when I say that most Rolex owners and wearers in the world did not keep their box.

I tend to think that papers and a box are evidence of careful owners. I don't buy watches without them...but that's just me. Clearly a 'box' guy.

If it was cheap perhaps, just for the ducks of it. But all the original box/papers for my watches are sitting in a drawer in plastic and I haven't seen them since I got the watches so I wouldn't put a lot of energy into it or lose any sleep.

tossed my green box out 40+ years ago & the last time I checked, the watch is still a Rolex. initially had second thoughts after joining TRF as many here have expounded the virtues of keeping them for posterity & value.

I did keep the red plastic COSC tag for some unknown reason & am curious how many folks go through the trouble of preserving & saving that green label on the case back...apparently there is no limit to the preservation of useless nomenclature.

the 'anchor' that accompanies Submariners is kind of cool & definitely worth keeping...what it can be used for, I haven't the foggiest. perhaps as a pendant or key-chain addendum? the only potential problem/issue is that it could tear a hole in your pants pockets or prove uncomfortable as jewelry.

Nope. I got a few purchased watch only, and if I had the box, I'll just have to figure out where to store it.

No. I obviously keep my watch boxes as I feel having a complete set is nice for resale as well as collecting, but the boxes are more or less useless to me. They sit in a closet from the first day I get a watch!

Seems I am in the minority here, I got my GMT 16700 pepsi in January, it had a modern box with it but I did source a genuine box to make up the set, I have the manuals, tags, calendar etc
Each to their own, but I took advice from a chap on here about who to contact for a genuine box as it seems even boxes are "faked " now !

I prefer a complete set but if I find a good deal without box I search one a few weeks later. Very important to find the proper box!!
I never use the box but I like to have a box per watch!!

If you want to sell it at some point, whether you care about the box or not, there is a large subset of potential buyers that do and it does affect the price. Does it affect the watch itself, no, but take a look and the lowest priced ones available are usually the ones with no box/papers. Given the choice between two similar quality and condition watches, most will grab the one with a full set.

For it to add value you'd need to source a box and papers. Since the warranty cards are no longer paper, a service warranty card may be adequate to complete the set.

I always source the correct box and documentation for
Any pre-owned Rolex I buy that doesn't come with them.
All I can't obviously source is the original certificate with the watch serial number on it.

Myself, I'd source a box and the booklets, etc.

I know a used dealer who stocks up on such odds and ends, so to complete a set would be simple, however, expensive.
