Black vs. Green Submariner...
Hi Guys,
I've decided to take the plunge and get my first Rolex watch. I just signed a huge deal at work and decided that this would be the perfect excuse to get my watch. The issue is that I am struggling with which watch to get. I have always thought about getting the black dial, but to be honest am a little reluctant because it is so common, even though it seems to be a really versatile watch in terms of dressing up or down. I love the look of the green one and that it's a little more unique but am concerned it might stand out too much. I know that may sound funny but I'm purchasing this watch for me, and would prefer for most ppl not to really notice that I'm wearing a Rolex. My colleague actually purchased a Zenith for this very reason. I'd love to hear if any of you guys have struggled with the same issues and if you did purchase a more "flashy" watch if most ppl noticed this and did it prompt weird comments like "how much did this cost", or anything of that nature? Did you find yourself wearing the watch less than what you intended? Thanks! J Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The green looks black in the shade but shines in direct sunlight. Green is also very versitile. Go green if you want to be unique.

Be different. Go with the green. It's a beautiful watch.

Absolutely. And for the love of the crown, don't put it on a "NATO" no matter what you do. Unless your Sean Conery and shooting a Bond film, leave it alone.

First off, congratulations on the accomplishment. As far as black vs green, I love both. I have had the black date and black no date version and have the green(Hulk) now. If this is going to be your only Sub, then I say go with black because as you said it is so versatile. The green is fairly versatile too, but not like the black and the black is simply classic. You will LOVE the gridelock clasp often newer models.
I personally do not care if people notice my watch. You are however choosing the most recognizable watch in Rolexs line up. Back on point. I really do love my Hulk and do not think I will sell it, so I can't really say which to get since both are such fantastic pieces. The green is stunning in many forms of light and in some light, the dial appears black. |

First off, welcome to TRF!
I would do a little reading on the subject as it has been covered quite a few times in the past. Depending on what other watches you own, the LV sub can be a wonderful addition. If you don't own any other watches, or no black every day watches, I would suggest the LNc instead. Hope that's helpful |

I'm deciding on the same thing myself. Although for me it's the Black GMT II or Hulk-sub. Part of me is saying "just get both!"
I'm leaning more towards the GMT because it will be my every day watch. The Hulk could be too but slightly less so. I have a Breitling that is a little more dressy so the GMT black would be a good match. |

I struggled with this same decision 8 years ago when deciding between the 16610 and 16610LV. I went with the LV and never looked back. I know it is a little different because the 116610V has a green dial but it looks black in some angles. Any time I see one in the wild I can barely make out the green dial but definitely see the green bezel, which I love.
I would go green, it is a little different and unique which is what you want. With regards to not wanting people to know its a Rolex - who cares what other people think. Life is too short buddy, rock it! |

Both fantastic watches, I cant decide between the two. Cant go wrong with black, but green is more unique. Maybe get green if you plan on getting another black watch. But like comments above, if this is the first, probably black....
I have the older, non-ceramic black sub and the hulk, you can see some side-by-side photos I snapped a few weeks back for comparison: http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=467469 |

Rolex is the most recognized wristwatch in the world. There's just no getting around it. Wealthy people like and own them as well as urban gangbangers. Sorry. If you're worried about people noticing your wristwatch and judging you then get something else besides a Rolex like JLC, Omega or Panerai to name a few. All of those have a deep heritage in horology and they all make some pretty sweet timepieces as well as have similar pricing to Rolex. If you do decide on a Rolex and I highly recommend them, I prefer the black submariner over green. You said you think they are more common and perhaps they are in the Rolex wearing world but I hardly ever see them in the wild. Or if you can really splurg go with the Smurf. Congratulations on your latest business success! I hope you enjoy your rewards.

I've had both simultaneously.
If you plan on having more than one (Trust me, hanging out here you will) get the LV. If you're going to be a one watch only guy, get the LN. Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk

I would say I have to totally agree with this - if only one, go black; if more than one, get green. I sold my 4 yr old black SubC and get the hulk and couldn't be happier. Maybe I will pick up a SD4K but most likely won't sell the hulk. |

Yes go get the BLNR. I have one and think (and was intrigued by other members) that BLNR and Hulk are one of the best and popular pairs on the forum. Actually I got BLNR after LN and it is the reason I traded my LN for LV just because both are black dial and don't look too much different. So again, trade your LN with BLNR and you won't regret it. Report back. Cheers. |

Thanks man. One other question..what you think about the pepsi GMT? I would LOVE to have that red/blue combo but I just CAN'T make myself invest in what I see as old tech i.e the non ceramic, bracelet/clasp not as good. |

The black SS Sub is my Grail piece. Why? It's the first Rolex I became aware of and when I saw one in the flesh about 25 years ago, I've lusted after one ever since. I still haven't picked one up though :banged:
I would say go green though. I absolutely love mine and it goes with anything. I've worn mine with a dark navy suit and pink shirt and it looked awesome (well I would say that, wouldn't I ). Thing is, it's a Sub. You can dress it up or down any way you want and it will always look fantastic. The green dial is mesmerising and can often look black in different lighting. It most certainly isn't shouty and is no more likely to attract unwanted attention than any other Rolex. No real wrong answer here but try both and see which you prefer. Mine says hi

I've owned both a 16610 in black and a 116610 LVC (green) and I admit the black is more versatile, but as you've already mentioned, it is more common. Much more common.
With that said, th green sub is also surprisingly versatile. I've had zero issues wearing it whether dressed for the gym, a wedding, a ball game, a vacation, etc. in other words I can wear for all occasions. Best of all it looks and feels special. The sunburst dial and ever changing shades of dark almost black green to light almost emerald green is absolutely mesmerizing. You will probably get a little more attention with the green sub but it's still not much depending on the people you hang around with. I think I've only had one comment on mine in 15 months. I'd say LVC assuming you're talking about Ceramic subs. I hope you're talking about ceramic subs or I just wasted a lot of time copying and pasting all these photo links below |

You know what's interesting. The first time I saw a green 116610, I didn't like it. The more pictures I see of it, the more I like it. I am at the point now where I actually love it.

I own a Subc and live in a condo in downtown Mia. I see more people in my building wearing a version of a SS sub Ie date/non date ceramic or classic black face. I never have seen an LV sub in the wild, so it is fairly common to see a submariner daily on someone else's wrist. Get the green and be different. Truth be told, I love my watch to much to trade or rotate it. Its my GRAIL good luck deciding

I just acquired my first Sub date (see my incoming in Sydney thread). I wanted it for so long it's not funny. I, like you, worked damn hard and saved for the last 12 months. It was what I wanted, not what I thought everyone else wanted or would say.
It's like saying I'll get an ugly wife because people will ask how I came to have a pretty wife so I'll avoid all that and compromise instead. No chance. Go with what you want cause it's you that has to live with it. First instinct is usually right. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
