Really boring question here:

Recently, I must have given my email address to a questionable site, because I am getting a couple of spam messages daily (I never get spam, generally). These are ridiculous, and consist of poorly spelled ads for Viagra and Cialis.

I've been simply bouncing them back to the sender (and deleting without opening), but wonder if there is a more effective way to get rid of these? Or, will they peter out if I keep bouncing? Thanks!

I'd make sure you virus software is fully up to date. Run a full scan.

Make sure you have some decent antispyware software, spyware terminator or Super Antispyware seem to do the trick. Run a full scan with that.

Clean out you temp files and temporary internet files.

If the email persists, there are instances when you can unsubscribe in the small print.
Just make sure if it is a link, your virus ware is running fully.

Darn, I thought this was going to be a processed pseudo-edible luncheon meat product thread.

Carolina, does your email have a "report spam" option? That blocks the sender from sending any more messages to you. My email allows me to adjust settings on what will or will not be interpreted as spam, and I have a spam mailbox that I daily go through and delete all content.

Errr, um.... I guess I shouldn't have given your email address to that nice company that offered me a free can of Spam for every 10 email addresses of my friends and family?

FYI I wold not unsubscribe to the links as suggested. The spammers will then know they have a valid e-mail address and NEVER leave you alone. The reason the ads are "misspelled" is that is how they can get through some of the spam filters...

Indeed, DON'T unsubscribe that's the 'stupidest' thing you can do, because then they know its an active address and will only spam you more. There not really a way to make sure you get less spam, once you email address is out there it will only get worse.

You could set the security level for your incoming mail higher so all the email addresses not recognized will automatically end up in your junk mail box. However, 'new' email addresses from friends will also end up in there, so make sure you check it regularly.

What's wrong with just using the delete button? The longer you stay on the internet the more spam you get, just delete it.

I don't know much about this stuff, but can't your computer get infected with worms, viruses, etc. just by the infected spam getting to your inbox, even if it's unopened or deleted?

That's why I've been bouncing them, hoping they would think nobody lives here! I need to check my filters.

I recently saw the statistics of our corporate incoming e-mail, about 79% is spam. We recently had to switch to yet another anti-spam system. System, because the amount of e-mail has become so huge that it needs dedicated servers to handle the spam alone.

Sending back the spam is useless, all the originating addresses are either forged or hijacked. Is has become a real industry, with thugs that write trojan horses to take over the PC's of unsuspecting individuals, forming bod-nets, to unscrupulous characters that send out all that spam.

A huge amount of Internet bandwidth is gobbled up by the never-ending stream of spam. Never use your main (private or business) e-mail address but make a special account (e.g. gmail) just to use on websites that want your address. Never 'un-subscribe' and never, ever believe that you can make millions by lending your bank account to park the fortune of a recently deceased Kenyan millionaire on

Caroline, if you're using Yahoo as your e-mail, you can click on Options/Mail Options/Spam. You can then add the domain of the spammer to list of blocked senders. That will keep the same ones from coming back.

I'm sure Google or any of the other mail programs have similar settings.

I get between 500-600 spam messages at work per day. But we have an external program that sits outside our firewall which blocks 99% of that garbage.

As an IT professional, here's my advice.

Open up a web based e-mail account like gmail, hotmail, yahoo and etc and use that address on the internet. Keep private ISP e-mail accounts restricted to family and close friends.

Our company works with Postini and it's scary to see how much e-mail they filter. Spammers suck.

These things come in waves!! For the past year...I've managed to block most of them...but I've noticed too...that I'm getting 5-10 pharmacy spams a day.....hopefully it will end soon!
