People confusing my watch for a Hublot!!
Anyone else have this happen to them... I've been wearing my new 44mm rose gold Royal Oak Offshore out a lot. I get lots of compliments but people keep confusing it for a Hublot!!! It's so annoying because I hate Hublot and their copycat watches!

Well Hublot copied the design and it is quite famous with non wis people, so I am not surprised, one time I was asked if my PP 5712 was a Royal Oak, made me smile and I said no, just say them no it's not Hublot, no need to tell them, except if they ask...

Exactly it's meant as a compliment, it's very much the reality celeb/footballers watch here, and so I was surprised that a successful watch dealer I know was wearing a RG BB instead of an AP.

Yep, me too. I will stop and talk if the other person seems to be a watch guy/gal, but most of the time they just see Rolex and go "oh he must be rich"

That honestly surprises me that you've encountered numerous people that are familiar enough with watches to even mis-identify an AP ROO as a Hublot. Who do you hang out with? Most of the people I know are more of the type that mistake a Rolex for an Invicta.

Last 3 people with Rolex's that I complimented all quickly replied, "Thanks! It's a fake!"

Most people probably think my FC 44 is a Casio. Fine by me.

Hublot has very successfully copied offshore and marketed it so well that I know people who have said there's a brand called AP that's copied hublot.

I don't follow Hublot, but just noticed they have an RM bite as well as all their AP copies. Terrible.

I was at a volunteer orientation meeting the other day wearing my Navitimer and the person next to me was also wearing a Navitimer. Go figure the odds on that but getting comments on my watches is rare except when I'm at a watch store. If somebody asked if my ROO was a Hublot, I'd be concerned for my safety

LOL, the ones I know wouldn't mistake a Rolex, but an AP or other major brands, sure they probably would...

1. Rolex offered rubber straps as options, called "Tropic straps", in the 1960s, Blancpain had sailcloth straps on their Fifty Fathoms, and Panerai also had rubber straps on theirs, so rubber straps were not exactly a revolutionary new development. 2. Even if it were, which it isn't, copying a strap would not, in my view, be anywhere nearly in the same league as copying design queues etc as Hublot has done.

Well Improviz,
I stand corrected in regard to your knowledge-however Hublot is only 36 years old and have made Huge leaps in those years. As Laozi once stated 'a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step' 1) Even though Rolex, Blancpain, inter alia may have initially started the rubber strap idea, if we are to be honest when Hublot first started putting rubber straps to gold pieces the backlash was considerable. "How dare they do this? What type of crackpot watchmaker combines gold with rubber?" To their credit they stuck with it and started their fusion movement. As I recall AP aficionados first scoffed at this very notion and now it is universally welcomed and praised. 2) After a while everyone looks like they are copying someone. I mean the 1st manufacturer who came up with the round dial has been copied by every other company by now. It's impossible to perpetually innovate-I mean how many materials can you use? water resistance can only go so far, etc. Incremental progress sure but true innovation is getting harder and harder. If that's the case EVERYONE after the 1st round case/dial maker in the 17th or 18th century (not really sure when) is a copier without doubt. 3) I know you think it's just copying a strap but it's more of a philosophy of combining different non traditional watch materials together to make something different and perhaps even better. "How many people when they first saw Hublot combine rubber with gold laughed and derided them for doing so?" Now I don't think so. Look around now steel with ceramic, ceramic with gold, carbon with titanium, and so forth. Hublot may not have been the very first but they certainly were at the forefront of this style. Anyway back to OP-if people give a compliment even if they are incorrect as to the watch brand, rather than taking offense be mindful of said compliment and be gracious about it. Obviously they are still complimenting you and no malice was intended. Would you prefer it if someone says "I don't like your AP it's ugly?" I know I wouldn't. :) |
