Need some advice on a 1016
Hi. I've just been offered this and wanted to get some thoughts. What do you guys think? It has service papers but I'll open the case back eventually.
Cheers |

i'd be taking that with both hands ... promptly. Lovely watch! Can't speak for the authentic from the pictures, but check for original hands, dial etc. Band looks right and patina makes it look fairly genuine. Limited polishing from the pics.
I just bought one, so I am biased! What year is this watch? Looks 80's? |

I was told 1974 by the seller. Thanks for the help. Anything else I should check before jumping on it?

that watch has a 78630 band, which from my study of the subject was made available from 1976. This is why I alluded to an 80's model. Having said that, the earlier band (the 7836) folded link I have in a box at home (70's mint condition) if you want to put the absolute correct band for the period. I have found the 78630 to be a little 'chunkier' than the earlier band, which does look different to my eye. I think the key to this deal is the price, so if you feel that you are not paying overs for it compared to market, then you should always be able to sell it on in the event you change your mind. It appears to be a very sound watch, but only you can determine if it's right for you.

That's a beautiful 1016, congrats! In my opinion you should have no concern over authenticity however you should be concerned about price. We will have to wait and see when you tell us the model number, but if that is from 1974 I suspect the crystal, dial, hands, and bracelet have all been replaced with early 80s versions straight from the Rolex service department. On the plus side, that makes your watch practically brand-new and modern to wear every day- mine is a 1960 and I bought it specifically for that reason, looks very new with just a hint of patina. On the downside, if you want something that is completely original and authentic from 1974 this may not be the watch for you. The going rate for a 1016 with those factory replacement parts is $7,000 USD. An original 1016 from that time period with all of its original components could clear $10,000. So as long as you're happy with a very clean and refreshed 1016 and as long as you are paying around $7,000, you look to be good to go. |

Thanks all. It's 408XXXX serial so it wouldn't be entirely inconsistent with a 76 78360 strap.
He wants around 7k Euros for it, so not far off your valuation Speedo, for something without papers? |

If you are buying this privately, try to negotiate down to 6300 Euro as that is the current price for buying that way. |
