Icon20 Which one would you pick as a daily beater 14060 or 14270?

OK, I was not gonna do this, but it seems I have to anyway.

Starting a so lame "which one to pick?" thread. However the goal is to decide which one I should pick with purpose of becoming a one watch guy in mind.

Some background info that is important in what I would like to get out of the watch I pick up.

1. I want it to be a classic, that I can pass down to generations to come

2. Most of the times I commute to work by train. A little under the radar look, so not screaming hey I'm a Rolex!

3. Within the budget of $ 5,000

4. Wears comfortable and proportionate on a 7.5 inch wrist

5. I want to wear it every day, to anywhere. I'd say a beater if the term wasn't so beaten to death already (pun intended)

6. My office has a Business Casual dress code, occasionally with the need of wearing a suit.

7. Versatility for dressing up or dressing down the watch

8. No quartz movement

Thanks for your inputs.

PS: Actually I wanted to make this a poll, maybe it's a better idea. It just I could not figure out yet how to set up one.

Sub 14060

Though if you don't want it to scream Rolex, I wouldn't pick a classic Rolex. An Oyster Quartz 17000 fits all your needs, and is unique in its design.

Thanks Abdullah. Quartz watches are not my cup of tea though. Just added this in my original post :)

Classic, goes with anything and under the radar

Got to be an Explorer

That was my choice and IMHO it looks good with anything and nobody will ever notice it.

Take a look at the 1530 then. Same case, mechanical movement.

Both are great model and I don't think you can go wrong with either. As a 14060 owner, I'm biased towards this model and it definitely fits all of your criteria:

1) Black, no-date sub. Does it get any more classic than that?

2) It is an amazingly low-profile watch and very understated.

3) I haven't checked recent prices and suspect $5,000 is a little low but still within ball park range.

4) My wrist is 6.5 inches. You'll have no problem with 7.5 inches.

5) As a classic, the 14060 is amazingly wearable as a daily watch in a range of situations.

6) See above. I wear mine to work all the time and work in a similar environment to the one you've described.

7) For versatility, see some of the following shots:

Both are classics and can serve your purpose.
The 14270 is a little more "under the radar" but that wouldn't sway my decision. Sub it is!

Thank you Quinhan. Beuatiful watch indeed, unbelievable versatility! 👍🏻

In fact I was totally sold on the 14060 until I had a recent discussion with an acquaintance. He praised the 14270 so much as being the ultimate tool watch I had to check it out.

Ever since then I just can't help it keep going back looking at it.😊 I'm really torn up by this😂

I'm sure the best would be to try them on and decide on the feel. However these are not models you can find at a Rolex retailer, are they?

Sub 14060 or 14060M. ..classic and will never go out of style. My first Rolex..will never sell it..that model has the habit of making its owners feel like that.Great tgo have the divers bezel to time things too.

I have similar versions of both and would probably choose the Sub for one watch. It's larger, has the timing bezel, and just feels more substantial. I do, however, think the Explorer is a great watch and is definitely under the radar.

Now I'm really considering adding Explorer II (16570, black dial to the mix :) What's your opinion/experience of this watch as the only watch one can own?

Given your budget and requirements you are almost in the price range of a brand new explorer 214270. Best of luck with your decision!

Thanks, I just don't see getting that one for that price. I might as well get a 14060 with a little stretch at that price.

You're right but the 36 mm concerns me a bit with my 7.5 inch wrist.

But no doubt for some reason (I'm a sicko? :D) I keep going back to look at 14270 photos on the internet :)

I had the 214270 (first) and also the 114270 Explorers and if you have 7 1/2 inch wrists the 36mm explorer might or not be too small for you, depending on whether your wrist is mostly planar on top or rounded like mines. A picture of another watch in your wrist might help to see if would be too small in your wrist).

Here is a picture of 114270 (sold) on my 7 inch rounded wrist:

For reference, here is a picture of my 16610 S series sub (had owned for 21 yrs) and the 114270 and 2141270 explorers side by side (switched from 39mm to 36mm model since preferred the proportions of the smaller size):

The sub is a do everything watch, my 16610 had served me well on everything I throwed at him for 21 yrs! Sub 14060 is the winner under that criteria for me.

No problem. Take your time with your decision until you're sure which one you want. Remember also to post pics once you've taken the plunge!

5,000 used? No date sub, no cyclops, under the radar. Best bang per buck.

I would say Sub. I really liked the Explorer a lot and was set on getting the 214270 but after trying it on it just felt small. I would imagine the same would happen with the 14270 as well. My wrist are just a tad over 7. I still like the Explorer and would like to have one someday but it won't work as an everyday for me.

I think a 114270 meets your requirements pretty well.

Thanks Grady, it's such a nice watch! My only concern is the 36 mm size. I really don't know how that would wear on my 7.5 inch wrist.

It wears quite well on my wrist, which is at least that big. It was my first and still the Rolex I love the most.

Some of my well-to-do, but Rolex ignorant friends accused me of wearing a fake when I first started to wear it.

That's what I call under the radar.

Yeah that's funny! It is clean and simple what's not to like about it?

But then again I have to at least try one on to see how "big" it wears on my wrist.

Certainly it would be the lowest budget option👍🏻
