What watch to get for my 40th bday...
Getting started late... What do I get myself..: thinking a new watch every 5 years... Problally more often in fact
What do I start with? Wait on the new Daytona, black dial? Sub Gmt Sea dweller The first is my obvious choice... My favorite... Or do I skip Rolex and go straight to ap? Feel like I need 1 Rolex tho... |

If money is no issue and you are willing to wait, why not go for the holy grail, the new Daytona C, for this milestone? It is your favorite anyways.
Unless you have some connections, looks like you will have to wait a bit. Pick up a classy and understated SD4000 in the meantime? |

If you're willing to wait then go for the Daytona. I can't see buying a watch that you're not really in love with just to hold you over until it's available.

Great topic. Going thru this now. Turning 40 in 1.5yrs so I kinda jumped the gun. My watch might be for my 39th, but comemorating your 40th with a Rolex is perfect in every way.

As to the OP's question, get whatever you really like. I would suggest going with a classic reference....one that you'll be inclined to hang on to forever. |

I turned 40 in January and got this (pic below). At that time they hadn't announced the Daytona 500. If they had I might have been tempted to wait. Honestly I don't feel like I'm missing out all that much. I've got the GMT on my wrist now, and if I get the call for a Daytona I might just have them both.

All pretty different... I'd try them on carefully and see what sings to you.

Do tons of research and try on plenty and you will find out what sings to You. I would not settle for a second or third choice. you don't want to have buyer's remorse. Best of luck with the hunt and Happy 40th. Let us know which direction you head

40th screams birth-year watch, I'd suggest a 1976 Submariner 5512. |

Definitely get the one you love and would never consider flipping in the future. All your options are great choices. For me I'd wait for the Daytona-C

The big 40 was an occasion to buy my DayDate. Now, 32 years later, it keeps perfect time.

What watch to get for my 40th bday...
Wait for your favorite. The Daytona. Give it a reasonable amount of time. If it's taking too long and you grow impatient, I would say that your alternatives are great choices. Between Sub, GMT (any variation), and Sea-Dweller, I would personally choose the Sea-Dweller.
To me, the Sea-Dweller has the virtue of all the contemporary features and the classic lines of past Sea-Dwellers, a perfect blend of old and new. You don't encounter them as often as the Sub and GMT. 40 is a special year, a turning point kind of year, and the Sea-Dweller would make a perfect way to commemorate that point. Chaps
Why on earth is a 40 year old man asking a bunch of strangers what watch to buy. They will all come up with different suggestions and oftens as not, they will not even come up with reasons for their choice. When he announces what he has bought, he will be told his choice is awesome. Mr OP, go into the shop with your wife and buy what you want. That works for 99.999999999% of the worlds population and it worked for me and will work for you. Regards Mick |
