Do you like complimenting people on their Rolex when out and about?

Soooo within the last few weeks I have commented on a few Rolex watches out in the open.

Only one out of the 6 or so people even acknowledged my comment. The others basically waved it off and seemed very snobby.

A few weeks ago, I was in Vegas and saw three Daytona-C's commented on all of them and got spoke to like I was an idiot!!!!

Now I don't think I'll ever make a compliment on someone's timepiece ever again.

Play the person not the watch!

It's pretty rare that I comment on someone's watch as a total ice breaker, and honestly I never really thought about it but your results may be the reason why.

I'd say my odds of having a decent conversation or at the least thinking "this is a decent person", are much better than your 1 of 6. I'd guess because I only really put myself out there if I get a good vibe from someone.

I have complemented several people and had the same weird reaction. Not everyone is as CrAzY about watches and Rolex as people on TRF.

One guy said, "O' it's a fake"... I was shocked!

I would never comment on someone's watch.

But I've had probably 3 compliments in the couple weeks I've had my GMTc LN!

(Didn't think I would, but there are a surprising number of WIS types out there, fighting the good fight against Fitbits and Apple watches)

Friends don't let friends complement other people's watches....just keep it on the DL and admire from afar.

I've commented on a random Hulk before. Stopped for a brief conversation and then I was on my way. Comes down to the person, so read that and you should be good.

NEVER, EVER COMMENT ON A STRANGERS WATCH....EVER

99% of the time the person wearing the watch that you are commenting on knows nothing about it other than the brand it is and that it was expensive.

So it is an absolute waste of time....period.

I think 99.9 is a bit of an exaggeration but I generally do not complement people on their watches.

I wouldn't have time. Every other dude in NY has a Rolex or an Omega, I'd have to stop and talk to everybody!

Nope! I don't check other people's wrist, however, if I recognized a Rolex, I would not compliment a stranger. Yes it's a Rolex, but it's just a watch!

When I first got into watches, I wanted to talk about and share information with people, but as I commented on their watches, it seemed wierd..lol

Most people who have really nice things like a Rolex for example, are more interested in people who live the wealthy life-style, and not those who have a small, fractional piece of it...ie a Rolex Watch...

So, they are not snob's...It's just that... Well, I'm sure you can figure out that one...

and although I do agree with the above statement, I would comment anyway...Because they are not taking my happiness away from me...Period.

Think it depends on the brand, for Rolex owners it can be hit or miss. I find those who own RM or PP tend to be more passionate about watches. Have had several people compliment me on my AP and it led to great conversations.

I've only been complimented once wearing my datejust , by a sales man in a jewlery store. Oddly enough it seems to be oddball stuff I wear or a goofy beater that gets a compliment from someone

If it's someone I'm having a friendly conversation with, maybe I'll mention something, but not just out of he blue.

I've only had one person comment on my watch out of the blue. A middle aged lady sat across from me in Starbucks and asked "is that a milgauss?", I was a bit taken aback, and said yes, she said "nice watch", and I just said a friendly thank you.

probably not a good idea as some folks might perceive it as threatening or an invasion of privacy.

I think a lot of people are also very security conscious, particularly if it's just a watch to them. They may not be aware of our dark underground sub culture of watch aficionados who like nothing better than to talk about these things. I think in many cases it comes across to them as just a random stranger walking up to them out of the blue and asking them about their $12,000 watch. I don't think that is comfortable for a lot of people in this day and age.

I refrain from commenting on others watches. I've had a few compliments on mine as well as caught a few people glancing at it as well.

I try not too, but the sometimes temptation is too great.

Case 1: In bike showroom, tryrekicking new models... young (20'something) sales guy wearing a white Daytona. I say snap, same as mine. He has no idea what I am talking about... tells me his parents bought it for his 21st birthday, hardly knows what he is wearing!!!

Case 2: In local video store (yes, some still exist,!) the owner is there. He is not always there, but I have noticed his DSSD. I figure most likely a WIS, so I finally compliment him. He looks at me like my hair is on fire... in hindsight, his reaction makes me think it may have been a fake and he was caught off-guard.

Now, the only time I let loose with compliments it at our Sydney GTG's!

If a complete stranger came up to me to mention my Rolex I would think he is a bit weird and not right in the head.

Regards

Bikers, runners, boaters, salute each other because they share the same hardships/pleasure, depending on the day. Not because they both wear Nike's..

So when you comment on a strangers non-vintage, run of the mill, ordinary Sub-C or Daytona, what exactly are you commenting on?

It's almost common knowledge at this point: complimenting a stranger's luxury watch is likely to cause him to act like a complete jerk.

It's a curious psychological phenomenon My theory is that average guy buys a Rolex to show off his superiority. He's a bit frustrated that no one acknowledges his watch. Later, when some poor TRF-loving chap comes along and offers a compliment, the receiver tries to grab $5,000+ of personal validation all at once by putting down the compliment-giver

I guess starting a conversation with "Nice watch" is not such a good idea.

I usually start with a little smalltalk. Then, if I feel it's appropriate, I comment on the watch.

Allways got good fedback.

I've received compliments on my Rolex and Panerai watches. I have rarely complimented anyone as it feels abnormal to do so IMHO. More often than not two men looking at each other's watch is plenty enough compliment.
