New DD-40
My wife passed away a couple of months ago after an extended fight with cancer. Prior to her passing, we discussed what we would do with some of her more ‘significant’ items. I got her a Rolex Datejust as a wedding present and we thought that it would be a good idea to trade/flip both my Sub and her Datejust for a new Rolex. We were thinking that the new Rolex would symbolically represent both our watches during our marriage.
I wanted PM but something that would be more on the conservative, ‘under the radar’, side. I called my salesperson at the local AD. I’ve been working with her for many years and actually purchased my wife’s engagement ring and Datejust (and another Datejust for my mom as her wedding present) from her. My wife and her really hit it off and she actually loaned my wife a designer necklace (something borrowed) for our wedding. I asked if she had a WG DD-40 in stock with the silver or rhodium stripe dial. She only had a silver quadrant in WG. I went down and tried on the watch and was about 80% there. I didn’t really consider the quadrant but it immediately caught my eye. However, I didn’t want to make any snap decisions with something so expensive. I was heading to Maui to carry out my wife’s final wishes so I told her that I would stop by Barron & Leeds and make a decision. B&L had several in stock and I knew that the silver quadrant was the one. The dark rhodium stripe was a close second. Came back home and had her order me one so I could be the first to handle it. It ran about 1 second slow per day for the first four or five days. Since then, it’s been keeping perfect time. I love everything about the watch. The slightest yellow note in the metal. How the PCLs contrast with the outer links. How the watch actually feels warm on the wrist. Etc. My wife’s favorite hobby was shopping. The only thing she liked more was when we went shopping for me, which was a rarity. I know that she’s tickled that I bought something nice for myself and also, what the watch means to both of us. Sorry for the lousy iphone pic: |

Sorry for your loss. A very nice way to remember her and your time together. The watch looks great but the meaning behind it is so much stronger!

Thanks for sharing. Given what you when through and the story about how you came to the watch, sounds like this will be something you will cherish for many, many years to come. Best wishes.

Must have been a tough one trading in your wife's watch but at least you'll think of her every time you have your new watch on

That is a touching story.
This is one example where a Rolex can mean so much more than a device to tell you to the time Wear it with fond memories

That hurt to read but I'm glad you shared this and thank you. I wish you the very best and it is a stunning timepiece. Very tasteful and the quadrant is subtle but not unnoticed. Elegant.
