Not buying from an AD

OK, so I've now that I've bought two Rolex's site unseen via the internet from non-AD's I feel confident in making the statement that when you do this, you will save money, sometimes a significant amount, but will most likely NOT get what's advertised. Chances are great what you receive will NOT be in the described condition, or will not include everything you see in the photos, or may not even be the same watch in the photos (neither of my two purchases were the actual watches pictured). Regardless of whether they are "trusted", or have a good rep, or have great online reviews, that's jut the way it is I guess. I'm 0 for 2 in this respect. Still happy with both my purchases, so I have no regrets, but both purchases were not without their headaches, and neither were the kind of over-the-moon experience that buying a grail luxury watch should be.

Interesting to hear, esp. about the watches not being the watches shown in photos. Most seem to feel otherwise about buying used. I've never bought a used watch myself. Did you buy from TRF members or elsewhere?

If the watch in the photos is not the watch you receive, that's a violation of the sales forum rules. You have to call them out if they don't make it right.

Agree with above posters, you bought from the wrong people.
I have bought about a dozen times on this forum, received 100% of what was proposed by seller. Sorry for your troubles.

If the watch is new, I couldn't see even trusted sellers taking new photos every single time...

buy the seller. I have bought two from this forum and were mint condition, pictures were dead on. Exactly as described. Since the transaction was so smooth I probably will never have a need to buy from an AD again.

I'm sure you're correct but they should. If it's posted on TRF and there is not at least one picture of the actual watch being sold in the sales post they are in violation of the site rules. It's posted at least twice in that section:

"Pics of the actual item being listed must be posted along with the ad"

"2. A For Sale post must contain the following information:
a. At least one clear picture of the actual watch being offered for sale or trade."

To echo others....buy the seller. It sounds like perhaps you didn't use one of the trusted sellers here. I have bought several Rolexes, (both new and used), from the known sellers here and never had an issue.
Sorry to hear about your troubles.

I agree they should, just seems redundant for them...And we, as buyers, have no real way of being able to back-check them, especially considering each seller has his own style of shooting pics, so similarity is to be expected...

This whole thing about it being in the rules reminds me of a witness taking the oath in court--yeah, it's there, but then the witness lies. Now what?

It's not redundant, even with BNIB. There are quality control issues to consider, for example. The big sellers here are all well aware of the rules, and no one is above the rules.

Sorry to hear you got a bum deal. There are a ton of grey market/used Rolex sellers out there and I have absolutely no doubt many of them are shady. That said, there are some good ones out there. I approached DavidSW based on his reputation here, and I would not use an AD again.

I agree with you, as I did before. My point: Where do the checks and balances come in? They don't. Because there are none.

Had a great experience on a Everose Daytona and it had full stickers on it as advertised. Not the 'exact' one in pics on their site, yet does that matter when a fully stickered is a full stickered? Nope, and saved a lot of $$ too. They don't post here btw, yet great dealer I've done many transaction with.

The classified are regularly looked at by moderators, and any member can report a suspicious or rule-breaking listing. Ads are pulled quite frequently, you'd be surprised.

Relatively new to Rolex. When buying a grey market, what does that mean? Can you still get service from AD or Rolex directly?

Not buying from an AD

Well it's true that inexperienced buyers learn the hard way to "buy the seller first". And to ask for detailed photos before buying. So you were lucky to get 2 watches that you've saved thousands on. I empathize with your buying disappointment but can't accept the rest of your narrative as valid.
Now this broad brush statement of yours doesn't apply to trusted sellers here. I know that the trusted ones do show actual watch for sale - just like I have for any I've listed.
I sense you bought elsewhere on the Internet. But now with the vast experience of 2 deals have come to the conclusion that we would "most likely NOT get what's advertised". You're simply wrong.
I don't know where you get the confidence after 2 deals to make such a wide ranging slam on resellers.
IMHO it is more a statement of your poor buying skills.

+ 100. could not agree more with the points you raised.

P.S. Saw your thread about the 14060 you bought from Gold Watch Co (do not think one of the TRUSTED SELLERS here). After a few suggestions, you chose to KEEP/HOLD on to the watch inspite of the offers from the seller to make it "right"

I've never had this happen to me dealing with david and thanh. Always received exactly what was pictured and described.

I've also done the same as a seller here.
