Hotel Safe Magnetism?
First off - I'm not a 'should I wear my watch doing this?' Or, 'should I wear my watch ever' king of guy. I wear my Datejust 99% of the time (in the gym, on the beach etc).
Howevvver... I heard that the magnetism from a hotel safe can affect your watch. True or False? I only ask because I'm planning to scuba in Thailand next month - Datejust will obviously be sitting out. Any help/experiences will be appreciated |

In the spirit of this forum, why bother with such little things. Leave that one at home, buy a sub and dive with it!
I've left my sub in one of those safes and never noticed an issue... |

I hope not! I have an electronic safe at home but I've never experienced any problems.
Safe makers would have to advertise "Not safe for Rolexes" otherwise.

Wonder what is powering such powerful magnets for a hotel safe?

You forgot to include "TRF know-it-all" in your signature line. Not sure why you have to be a d-bag in >90% of your replies. OP, there's plenty of stuff on this, just do a check search and you should find what you need. |

Good thing I was unaware of this in Curacao. I could have endangered my DJ by leaving it in a safe. Luckily I just dove every day with it instead.

And how is calling someone a d-bag better? He is generally short, blunt and to the point but it's hard to argue with his conclusions. Op, yea it's safe. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Oh it's not any better, but I never understood snarky remarks to a genuine question. Yes, the same question has been addressed tons of times before (on all topics) but why reply in a way that's completely unhelpful? Truthfully, it seems like a waste of time to me.

That being said, I've not heard of magnets being a problem in a hotel safe. If you are talking about the safe in the room, I wouldn't leave it there and magnets would be the least of my worries. Put it in the hotel safe if you aren't going to take it swimming.

I wouldn't leave anything of value in a hotel safe. Check out the various YouTube videos of hotel safes being cracked in a matter of seconds.

I would be more worried about the security of the safe.
Left mine in the home safe all the time and no issues afaik. |

[QUOTE=T. Ferguson;6830777]I'm confused, if you wear it 99% of the time including the beach then it isn't obvious to me at all why your DJ will be on the bench.
Not for scuba diving (i.e. part of the 1%) |

I would not leave my watch in a hotel safe. If you're too worried about the watch, don't bring it on the trip.

Ive left y watches in a hotel safe all the time. Have experience anything. Also I've never had anything stolen from a hotel safe. I guess if your hotel is nice i don't think the staff will be cracking the safe to get your stuff.

Hotel safes are notoriously unsafe. Use the front desk safe for items of any significant value.
The electro magnets in hotel safes are very weak and only fight a weak spring to lift the locking mechanism and will not affect anything (like a watch). Most hotel safes only require a thump in the right place to open them and the cleaning staff know this. Your security is only as good as the cleaning staff roster and keycard system used at the hotel to trace who accessed your room. Be wary of room safes, and don't use the coffee machine either, I know hosties who wash their stockings in them. |

I would too if I had one It has the screw down crown and is waterproof to a depth of 100 Meters. My guess is the OP will be doing a recreational dive on the trip which will likely have a limit of between 30 - 40 meters (100 - 130 feet) anyway. In his shoes if those circumstances are accurate I would totally just keep it on my wrist. That's often the "safest" place for these watches to be.

With the safe door shut and locked grasp the handle, take second hand and bang top of safe while using first hand to pull open locked safe.

I have never had any issues using a hotel safe, yes I am aware of the pitfalls, that is what insurance is for.

To the OP, the magnetism will not harm your watch, never had any problems with that.

Lost the combo to a safe on a cruise ship.
(Same as in most Hotel Rooms) Pursur staff had an instruction manual for opening. Took about two minutes. Conclusion--Safe of that type is good to keep your spare paper clips in. |
