Datejust 16233 1998 with acrylic glass

Hi.
I am thinking about buying this Rolex Datejust watch.
16233 from 1998, but it has plexiglass and not sapphire? Is this a red flag? I have attached some pictures.
Thank you in advance.

No, 1998- and after I know, the acrylic glass stopped in the early 90?

If this is indeed a U or A series I'd say pass on it.

The 16233 started with the R series in 87-88 and had sapphire crystal.

The seller say that the watch arrived to them (it is a watch store) that way, and they doesn't know if the former owner has replaced the glass? Is that even possible?

But yes, they told me that it is from 1998..

Yes, thank you so much! I really appreciate all of your answers. I won't buy the watch- too afraid that it is fake. The seller can not give me a straight answer, why it isn't sapphire crystal.
And I don't think that you would change the sapphire crystal to acrylic?
Thank you again.

i dont think its a fake , per say /// just not what its being sold as ,, hold out for a sapphire crystal as a daily wear , common model and thousands to pick from in all sorts of dials and colors.
happy hunting though.

People sometimes go online and see a watch that looks like theirs and then assume all the details are the same for their own watch... nevertheless this is a 16013 model with plastic crystal from the 80s.

Does not look like a 16233 to begin with. Like previous members have touched on, I would say 16013.

The fact that the watch has acrylic crystal doesn't make the watch a fake. I have a similar SS Datejust given to me from my father-in-law with acrylic crystal. It was originally sapphire but he was sick of replacing the crystal every time it was chipped so asked Rolex to swap it for acrylic.

As for the lug holes, I was unaware the newer models don't have those.

It doesn't look like a fake to me. Looks more like a replacement crystal and possibly incorrect date given by the dealer.

Hmm Rolex will not replace sapphire with acrylic or visa versa, this was not done at Rolex it's against policy

It may not be a fake, just sounds like a shop that isnt sure about what they have.

I may have received some misinformation on my watch. My father-in-law has several DJs and may have confused or merged the info he was giving me. It was only ever serviced at Rolex and I have the receipt from the last service where they replaced the crystal. My DJ is from 1978 so it would have had acrylic crystal all along. I haven't removed the bracelet yet to see the ref number but I'm assuming it will be 16010. It is now my understanding that Rolex didn't start putting sapphire crystals on the DJ until the late 80's.
