My stolen '67 MF 5513

Dear Friends,

During the night of July 11th, my '67 Meters First 5513 was stolen in a jewelry store heist in the Greater Milwaukee region of Wisconsin. I have written previous forum posts about this watch:

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=455843

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=461974

The watch was purchased from Andrew Shear this year. The serial is #1,689,158.

The watch was in the process of a service, and was disassembled at the time of the theft. The thieves stole the box that contained: midcase, caseback, bezel and insert, new 700 crown/tube(I had sourced one NOS and it was installed), and the original Superdome crystal in place. The dial, hands, and movement are in a secure location.

I have hesitated to share this openly, but several members have encouraged me to get the word out to a larger group. I am obviously saddened by the loss. This was my birthyear "Grail" 5513. I have a very small collection (now two to be exact), and this was the jewel.

I share this story in hopes of a possible recovery. If you all would please keep your eyes open while on eBay, at pawn shops, sales forums, etc. , I would be extremely thankful. I am forever the optimist, but we all know they likely tossed my parts in the trash. Additionally, I will want to source a '67 of the same quality for a replacement. Please feel free to reach out if you know of any, happen to stumble across one in the future, or if you have a '67 that you were considering letting go.

Regards,
Mattedialdoc

My local AD just got a 5513 meters first sub in a week ago. A local guy's dad passed away, so the son traded it in on a new datejust. The AD said it was a 1.5 serial number. Not sure what year that corresponds to.

That is horrible and I feel very bad this happened.

How does determining payout from insurance occur while retaining some parts including the movement?

That's not a way I would expect to lose a watch. That's really terrible. On the bright side, at least there are two insurance policies covering it.

That is certainly terrible news... but who has the knowledge to steal a vintage Rolex in pieces? Why would a thief even bother knowing that they would have to find a watchmaker to put it all back together. And since I'm sure you are going to report the serial number as stolen, will a watchmaker figure out that it is stolen?

Sad news - was your watch the only one taken?
Very odd act for criminals to commit when they succeed so easily with smash and grabs.
Hopefully you'll be made whole again soon.

My watch was one of many watches stolen. Given this was an AD, the loss is significant. The investigation is ongoing.

I'm just curious how replacing this would go?

Obviously the AD would replace it, I assume, but would they be obligated to replace it with the same vintage piece?

im curious too. early stages of figuring that out. in a way, these pieces are irreplaceable. they can't just order me up a new one. I remain hopeful.

According to the one chart I checked quick a 1.5m serial looks closer to 1961 or 1962. But I know there are several charts and I am. It sure which one is the most accurate. But the same chart shows a 1.69m as 1964 so not sure how valid it is as I am certain doc knows that his 1.69m is in fact a 1967.
