Sub-date no box or papers.

I have been a member of this community for several years now and consider myself to have some knowledge about watches. I mostly buy them for me but unfortunately always end up flipping them. Currently own a 2-tone Datejust II cream dial with diamonds but I miss my sub-date. I recently sold for a low price my Sub-date C that I wasn't wearing and as expected the itch is back to get the Sub-date again. I realized I like the old style sub. The classic and I have been looking around. I want to expend no more than 5500 and the ones that I have found to be adequate don't have papers. I pretty know the answer about the resale value but I'd like to know your input.

What do you think about getting a Rolex Sub-date with no papers or box from a "reputable dealer" here in the sales forum?. I am planning to keep the watch this time and for all...

Your basically laying out the money to rent the box and papers! You'll pay $500 more to have them and sell it for $500 less when you don't! When it comes down to it, most of the time they are expired warranties anyway. To be honest, I'd rather buy a watch from a trusted seller with THERE warranty than buy from someone who has the papers but doesn't offer you a warranty of your own.

Personally I would not care about B&P for the model in question. I usually get emotional over B&P if it is a rare model (Dial, Stones, Etc.).

Just make sure the price reflects the missing B&P.

OP, for an old sub...couldn't care less about papers. What value do they have? If you buy the watch right (meaning price reflects not having them), then you're good!

As others have said, buy the watch (and the seller most importantly) if price reflects no box/papers and its in a condition suitable to you. I've bought one or two without box and papers and never regretted it.

I basically agree with what you're saying, but I'd add that it's an oversimplification to view the difference only in monetary value. There are some potential buyers who will not even consider a watch without B/P regardless of price. Buying a watch without papers will always limit your potential buyer pool when it comes time to sell. It will still sell, but it may take longer.

Buying from a trusted seller without papers is one thing, but when Joe forum member goes to sell the same watch a year later, the buyers are much more skeptical.

The Rolex service card you get if you have it serviced will trump the original papers anyway. This is why I don't mind buying a watch without 'papers'.

Exactly as today these bits of paper and boxes are the easiest to fake so never rely on these mostly out-dated warranty paper to prove authenticity of any watch..

When you say you're interested in the "old style" sub, with date, I'm guessing you're talking about an early 80's matte dial or mid 80's WG surrounds 16800, right? If so, you might be able to find a clean/honest example at your budget of $5500 but I doubt it will include B/P. And to me that wouldn't be a problem.

I think you should buy the complete watch with box and papers. If it was not about the money you would buy complete or you would not have asked here if you were straight up good with it. Shop around and pay for the model you want as you will be happier in the end.

The only reason to have the box and papers is for resale. If you aren't going to sell it, then save the money! Heck, if it's a used watch, the warranty is probably expired, and if you wear the watch, you're not going to put it back in the box, am I right?

Thanks to all for your replies. I now have a better understanding of the topic. With the help of your comments and advises I have finally made my mind. The most obligatory requirement now will be to see the watch in person and fall in love with it, so box and papers are no longer strictly required. I have had subs since 2004 and have flipped them all. I think is time to get THE ONE and keep it. My small Rolex collection is currently incomplete without it.

I always wonder about a newish watch that doesn't come with anything. With all the unnecessary cosmetic refinishing people are doing there days, it's impossible to tell if a watch has been treated poorly. Fair or not, I suspect that no box watches have had hard lives.

Obvious disclaimer for something older.

l was a chronic flipper! Buying a watch with no papers to me made me want to keep it more. It was kind of like saying "it's mine and I'm not selling it"! So no need for expired paperwork.

Your point makes sense. I'll have to be a very good observer and look at everything before committing. The overall condition and polishing condition of the watch will give me an idea of how beaten the watch was. That's when inspecting the watch and falling in love with it falls into place.

The only time you'll wish you had the box and papers is if you go to sell it, then every over educated WIS will tell you it's worth several thousands less without the box and papers.
