Icon20 I'm writing this from 33,000 feet

Sweet old lady (85+) sitting next to me on the plane before we took off: "That's a very nice watch you have. My grandson would love a watch like that. What kind is it?"

Me: "oh, thank you. It's a Rolex."

Sweet old lady: "what is it?"

Me: "a Rolex."

Old lady: "I can't hear you, what kind?"

Me: "a Ro-Lex"

Old bag: "what?"

Me: "IT'S A ROLEX!!!"

Old lady: "oh, how nice."

Now everyone in first class thinks I'm trying to pick up old women by bragging about my watch.

Did I get trolled by an octogenarian?

Seriously one of the funniest things that ever happened to me. I kept thinking I should just say "timex."

No, the octogenarian was probably hitting on you. Too bad it wasn't one of the stewardesses.
Any updates?

My mother in law was very deaf. She learned to lip read. Loved her dearly. She would not know a Rolex from a Rolls Royce. My guess your companion was the same.

The story gets better. Shortly before landing, and after she'd had two Bloody Mary's, she says she apologized for making me repeat myself and said she just wanted to make sure she heard me correctly because she didn't know Rolex was still in business. She said her father owned a "great big" Rolex in the 50's until he died in 1979. She says she thinks she still has it sitting "in a pretty red box" somewhere.

I have a feeling she meant an early submariner. It was pretty big for its time, comparatively, I think. And if I'm not mistaken, an original box for that watch may have been red. Someone correct me.
