Use of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Banned on Singapore Airlines

Ok, so this is a bit old hat now but I have to share.

I'm on a Singapore Airlines plane about to head back Down Under. Usual announcements made over the PA and tagged on the end: 'users of Samsung Galaxy Note 7, kindly be advised that the use of your device on board is prohibited'.

Did someone yell "fire on board?".
Have a safe trip Paul.

Galaxy s7 edge almost looks identical. Hard to imagine how this can be enforced.

Anyone caught ignoring such a request, which there will be at least one, should be banned from flying forever

Samsung (SSNLF) announced a voluntary recall of 2.5 million phones worldwide

Consumer Product Safety Commission and Samsung are urging owners of Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 to stop using their phones

The airlines also banned all hoverboards when they were catching on fire.

I'm not sure how things work in the rest of the world, but on British carriers it's a criminal offence to fail to follow the orders/instructions of a trolley dolly (being married to one, you can only imagine what goes on chez Van Driver ). So if there was an incident on board resulting from someone using a Note 7 having been told not to, maybe by B/S'ing that it was a Galaxy S7, the consequences would be pretty serious

I flew American out of ORD today. You have to carry the Note 7 on your person and it must be off in flight. There were announcements at the gate and onboard. They said it was an FAA requirement.

When I arrived in Brisbane last night, they wouldn't let me bring my pet Wildebeest in.

It's advice not a requirement. It is easier for a company to enforce a policy if they defer and blame a government agency.

My airline has not banned there use yet. I wish they would.

While the chances of anything happening are small, from a pilots perspective there is not much more frightening than being in the air and on fire.

Don't turn your back on it. It will burst into flames when you least expect it. Those Note 7s are sneaky that way.

The short answer is that Samsung engineers are way smarter on these phones than any of us and they've advised their management to take it in the shorts on a massive recall. The risk would need to be demonstrably real for Samsung to move on it. It's unwise IMO to dismiss it as a frivolous issue.

I'm actually pleased that Samsung are getting a backlash over this. Remember when iPhone 6 was released and the huge kerfuffle followed because the phones were found to bend under sustained pressure? Thing is, Samsung and HTC phones were also known to bend and there was no public outcry. In my view, the only reason Apple got caned over the bending of the 6 was because it was Apple. I'm glad that Samsung are now getting flamed in the same way.

I'm hoping Samsung can make this right soon because this is crazy. I read about the one smoking on the US airliner but wow. Certainly saw this coming.

Emirates airlines ban its use as well. They announce it before the flight as well.
