Replace my Sub?

I've been thinking about this for a bit now and would appreciate your feedback.

My Sub has been my go anywhere do anything watch for sometime now. Sure, my other watches get in the rotation, but I keep coming back to the Sub as it is, by far, the most comfortable and versatile watch I own.

So, why think about betraying my tried and the? Well, the Sub was a wedding gift from my soon to be ex's family, and, well, she's soon to be an ex. Now, when I look at the watch it doesn't quite bring the good feelings it once did.

Options on the table are: 1. Keep wearing the Sub and call it done. 2. Replace it with something else. Obviously, my mind has been heading to option 2, but my dilemma is finding something as sturdy and versatile. I like the size, prefer a bracelet and would like a date window, though I could cave on the date. I'm not dead set on 40mm as I appreciate that different watches wear differently even if they are the same size. I also have a couple of 42mm (Speedy) and 43mm watches that wear fine.

I'd love your thoughts.

Definitely needs to be an ex sub. I like either Mike's suggestion or the post above.

If in your shoes, I would trade it for something else.

My preference would be the current version Sub date 116610 or the current Sea Dweller 116600, all depends on if you truly prefer the cyclops over the date window and a gloss dial (Sub) vs the no cyclops and satin dial with a slightly higher profile(SD). They do wear a bit differently but both are equally as versatile as your current Sub.

If you ultimately cave on the necessity of having a date, the Sub 114060 is hard to beat. It can be had here new in the box for around $1k less than the Sub date and likely around $1600+ less than the SD 116600.

Sorry about your situation. If it's too difficult to carry on, try a GMT.

Def this! You obviously need a sub going by your info, you just simply need a new one to start afresh!

I'd offer to return it and and get another sub but that's just me. Based on your wrist size maybe another 16610, 14060 or 16610LV.

I'm really superstitious.
I'd probably return it back to the family or throw it in the trash. I don't want any of that bad-ex mojo on me.

I would upgrade to a 116610 if it were me. I tried my brothers 16610 for a day while visiting him. Couldn't get past small hour markers, could barely read minute hash markers. However was a lightweight and comfortable watch. Love the improvements on 116610.

Agree with moving on and sorry to hear about your situation.

I wouldn't offer it back unless it was something that was handed down in the family (Unlikely here I imagine) or if she is returning your engagement ring.

I would trade for a ceramic Sub or SD or if that's too similar the GMT or YM should do the trick.

Let us know what you decide to do!

Thanks for the thoughts. I will likely put the Sub away for my son. I feel like that would be appropriate.

I was actually thinking of going something kind of completely different, like a Fifty Fathoms (but concerned about the size) or a JLC Navy Seals diver or an Explorer II polar.

I'd launch that watch given the circumstances. For additional differentiation, how about a color change:

Depends on if you like the blocky look of the new Submariner, many do not.

I'd go Sub C LV.

It has everything you love about the Sub but the colour change will make it a totally new watch!

I have been in your shoes, and part of it stems from how nasty the divorce has been. My Ex hates my guts, and I don't think too highly of her either. There was a reason we got divorced, and I honestly can't understand those that get divorced and remain friends. There is no way on earth I would give my kids ANYTHING that has to do with their mother or her stupid family. I had to sell a couple watches that were acquired during my last marriage.

Sorry, but my kids will get watches from ME, and not something from my Ex's family or from her.

If your divorce has been more civil, I can understand you wanting to put it away for your son.

I would trade it on a new 116610. Great watch, fresh start. You can pass it down to your son.
