A. Lange Saxonia Thin 40mm

What're your thoughts on the 40mm Saxonia Thin? Right now it seems like a toss up between the ALS and the VC Patrimony Traditionalle...

This will be my first dress watch and since its a sizeable chunk of change, i want to make sure I've done my homework before buying.

The saxonia thin is a beautiful watch, the detail is in the the simplicity of it, and will make you want to stare at it for much longer than just telling the time, and that is some achievement for such a simple watch, you can just see how much thought has gone into the piece, even the thinness of it, it is perfect, and not trying to be too thin for the sake of just that.

Though the proportions of the 37mm version is so much better, as the face on the 40mm had too much empty space on the dial, and also the movement was too small for the 40mm version.
The 37mm version sets these problems straight, and I really think it is one of the most perfect 'pure' watches ever made. And the best part is that the price is so much better than the competition that you could buy a Rolex gmt or a reverso tribute with the ALS 37mm thin for around the price of just the VC patrimony as it is that much more expensive than the saxonia thin (only in 37mm mind you, the 40mm is much more pricier for just 3mm, though the 37mm is is the definitive version, and a much better size for the style of watch anyway).

Yes, I love the watch, and have seen both pieces in the flesh.

I truly envy your position, and wish you well with your up coming purchase.

Thanks Talzio. My current watches, a Rolex Explorer and Panerai 233 are 39mm and 44mm respectively and I'm a little worried that the 37mm might seem too small (not that I have a big wrist).

Guess I will just have to try it on in person and see how it looks.

Any thoughts on the 38.5mm Saxonia Automatic? Being offered a 30% discount by the AD on that, though I haven't seen the watch in person.

+1 on the 37mm version. Tried both and loved the smaller model due to the better proportions. I have a 7" wrist and typically I wear anything from 35mm to 42mm.

Love the Saxonia Auto. Wears big, so at 38.5 it is a perfect dress watch size even for my big wrist. This is the older dial style, which I like better than the newer one.

I had the explorer 39mm, it's a great daily wear watch. You have a very nice pair of watches and adding a dress watch would give you that casual/sport/dress trio, so would be a well balanced collection.

With regards to size, it is all about the style and type of watch, the Panerai is a diving watch and known to be large, the explorer is a sports watch so 39-42mm is perfect, and the saxonia is a dress watch so 36-39mm is great, especially for a time only (of course there is no written rule, this is just my opinion).

Like I said, I tried on the saxonia thin 37 and 40mm, and found that both sat extremely well on the wrist, but the 37mm was the nicer. Just to note, I have a 7 inch wrist size.

The saxonia automatic is also beautiful, I prefer the saxonia line because the lugs are much finer then the 1815 and Lange models. The new chocolate dial one looks great, though I have not seen it in the flesh.

30% is a great deal, mind that the automatic movement is not finished quite as well, no gold chatons etc. Where as the saxonia thin's manual movement was made from the ground up and they left no holds barred on the movement finishing and so is the highest of their standards, but not so much for the saxonia automatic for one reason or another. (Again, just my opinion).

The 37mm would be my choice if picking the Lange; and I'd pick the Lange over the VC.

Both are beautiful, but I'd give the edge to the Lange. Such a great dress watch

Thank you gentlemen. Valuable comments all. Unfortunately, the AD here only has the 40mm in stock and is willing to offer a 25% discount of list price on it. Plan on trying the watch on in person and then making a decision.

Any idea why ALS watches take such a hit when it comes to resale?

They only take a huge hit if you pay retail. I don't believe many people pay retail for the more commonly available pieces - indeed you are being offered 25% straight off the blocks. Therefore a used one selling at 40% or so off retail doesn't necessarily mean the someone's taking a bath.

The 40mm version is great, but wears larger.

The VC is also an amazing watch.

I went through the same some months ago and settled on the Saxonia Thin 37mm, the value proposition was hard to resist. The proportions are better and since I only wear a dress watch once a month or so it made sense to spend a bit less and get a quality piece.

Try them on, only way to find out.

A 38.5mm would be better, but I could not justify the price difference.
