Why do people like the Milgauss so much?

I'm not bashing the watch, I'm just curious. What turns people onto the watch so much that they're willing to pay more than retail at times? Is it the looks? Or the rarity?

Again, I'm not looking to bash it. I'm just wondering because I personally do not like it.

EDIT: It was supposed to say "like", not "live". Sorry for the typo.

I paid retail and not a penny more. However, its the first Rolex I purchased without getting a discount. The GV, in my opinion, is simply a stunning watch to look at. I feel the same about the white dial Milgauss. I think the GV is worthy of a design award. The green crystal is genius and I love the orange lightning bolt second hand and orange lume. This watch is truly stunning in the day light. Just a damn good looking watch!:thumbsup.

Oh by the way, I don't understand why people go crazy for the NY Yankees, I mean, I'm not looking to bash them, I just don't get it because I don't like the Yankees ;)

In the begining I bought a white MG at MSRP of $5.9K + tax. It didn't really sing at me but bought it anyway because I want to be on top + top of ss white Daytona list.

Unworn have it sold with few hundreds profit...not bad.

Come along out of no where a TRF member here have the same watch for sale, at $5K even shipped.

Well the second around was the charmer...

I like the white MG a lot...the platty YM would go first before MG.

The novelty i guess, i have 2 of them paid msrp for both, and when i find a gv at msrp i will pick it up. For me its just a part of my collection. But the over msrp is crazy, Who nows , i recall seeing a gv selling on ebay for 16,500.00 usd now thats gotta hurt. Rolex makes a few watches i would never buy; not going to list them.
What do you think the new deep sea is going to fetch in the first few months on the grey market.

I didn't pay over retail (wouldn't for any watch) but bought it because I wanted something a little more subtle than my TT blue sub and didn't want to go with anything less than 40mm so a SS datejust wasn't an option. I'm a die hard Rolex fan and didn't want another Sub or something similar like a GMT. It's a very clean look and unlike any other Rollie in my opinion.

And I agree with tphan, it's a very heavy, sturdy watch. The datejust I had prior to it just felt feeble in comparison.

Do you miss the date feature? I feel like I use my Sub's date feature more than the time feature

I didn't like the Milgauss at all until I saw the black and white dials in-person. It's really a fresh look from what I expected from Rolex.

Haha, yes I do. That's why I still wear my Sub to work. However, I couldn't imagine it with a cyclops. The watch is just so clean looking with the polished center links and bezel that it would stick out like a sore thumb.

The Milly is usually for the weekend and at night when I don't care about the date

Yea, I never thought I'd buy a watch without a date but this watch is so cool looking in person, I couldn't pass. It's going to be my weekend watch and my IIC is my work watch.

I love it becuase of the clean lines and the 40mm dial. I think that the orange pops off of the dial and is both classy and fun. Everytime I look at my wrist I smile!

I like it because of the anti-magnetic properties. I'm around MRI machines from time to time and its great not having to worry about my watch. Plus it's absolutely stunning!

Because the green crystal is very special. I do agree a date would be perfect combo for that watch.

I really like my Milgauss, and I'm planning to buy another one, between black dial or GV. Maybe next year, after I buy Bluesy first.

Interesting point.

:) Actually i think all mechanical watches would survive an EMP, because it only effects electronic ones i.e. Quartz/battery powered ones will stop. So all manual wind and mechanical auto would be ok I presume...

Eventhough i haven't got one as yet, the millie is on my wanted list. Its clean lines and 40mm size make it different to all the other sport watches. Add to that the slightly humorous lighting bolt arms and you have a perfect, classey weekend watch.

Haven't seen the GV in the flesh. Dont really understand what the fuss is about. Hopefully my fellow forumers can open my eyes!!!!

Well not really new just trying to copy the first Rolex Milgauss that arrived on the scene back in 1954 with the 1019, later the 6541.Ended production I think in was 1988 very very poor sellers at the time. But now early models can make telephone numbers prices, perhaps this is the allure of owning a modern day Milgauss.

So new in its modern pretender guise, but quite a old design around 50 plus years old.

Well, here's my theory. The "Magnetic" of EMP may magnetize any other mechanical watch while the "Electro" would fry any quartz. The Millie should survive.

But I'm no expert... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

I don't have one (yet), but in my case, I always liked the classic oyster perpetual case with the smooth bezel. Flutted is my second choice, but I do not like the newer domed bezels. I also like the classic look of the matter dial.

Right now it is the cheapest way to get the classic oyster perpetual case with the smooth bezel in a larger size (the other way is to get a platinum Day-Date II).

I think it is popular it is new and different.

my feeling is that you should SOON be able find milgauss's sitting in the display case and get 10-15% easily on black and white milgauss just like some of the not so popular Rolex SS models.

I had a black milgauss. Looks great but too heavy and tall on my wirst.
