First Rolex Watch: Milgauss, Black or White dial???!
Hi rolexforum,
I've been absolutely torn on my first luxury watch purchase... I've narrowed it down to two options of one model - the Rolex Milgauss 116400 Black versus White dials. I'm leaning towards the black at the moment, but I tried on the white today and it is very, very cool! I really like it, however my main concern is just in that, I want it to be an everyday watch... I work at a conservative-ish corporate office (none of the offices in Australia are too conservative compared to the US or UK however), so I feel that the fairly large orange indices is maybe not the most suitable watch for the office. With considering an all-rounder, I've been asking myself "would I wear this watch to a job interview" and "would I wear it to the beach/hiking", and I want the answer to both questions to be yes - and I'm not too sure about the loud-ness of the white dial in a conservative setting.. but then again maybe I'm over thinking it. It's interesting how different the two watches wear very differently for me... in the black dialed watch, I really like how the focus put on the lightning bolt seconds hand which really pops, and I think dial is amazing balanced with the subtle orange indices on the outer edges. The white however doesn't focus on the lightning bolt hand at all, I think your eyes are drawn very much to the bright orange indices. The white also wears a bit bigger than the black due to the high contrast dial and the numbers on the edges too I think... So I'm leaning towards the black, what do you guys think?? (photos below of the watches on my wrist) I have a 6.5 inch wrist, so pretty small, however I do feel it sits quite well and comfortably. |

I think I would go with your leanings...black. And I agree with your assessment of it fitting it better around the office.

I prefer black as I own the GV. Maybe it's the camera angle, or your wrist, but the dial won't be the attention getter. The watch (to my eye) looks a tad large. I believe that's what will get noticed. Here's a photo on my 7.375" wrist. The Milgauss sits, tall, too.
Pardon the cat in the photo. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Black. Or better yet.... both.
Black is discontinued. White appears to be as well or at least removed from the website. Get them new while you can. |

I have a GV but absolutely love the black as well. I think I actually prefer the all white indices over the orange 3-6-9 of the GV. I do think black does better as an all rounder, the white is very casual. But I was not a fan of the white when I tried it on. I think too much orange for my taste.

Hi Rob, if this is going to be your one and only get the black.
I personally prefer GV, the glass does make it more unique. Under the cuff it will remind you how special a watch it is. As a watch player I'll pickup a white to match with a coloured rubber strap as a fun toy. My 2cents

I think the black is much more striking. After a few days of admiring your new Millie in different lighting conditions I think you will realize, as I did, that the single most eye-catching element is the green crystal, and when people say what a cool watch you have, it will be because of that. If you go with the white, you will be denying yourself this little pleasure.
Just as a personal buying preference, the watch that screams "Buy ME!" the loudest is the one to buy. At the end of the day, if we just want to know the time we'd use our cell phones. The utility we get from these watches - at these prices - has to be in our personal enjoyment of the piece. So I wouldn't concern myself too much with its intended use and focus much more on what you like best. Others probably have a different plan of attack, ie what is more collectible or iconic, etc. One last point...as a Milgauss owner I insist that you try on the z-blue before you buy. |

I prefer the white. Tried it on last year at an AD and quite enjoyed it. Black is nice for sure, but the white with the orange is a unique piece.

I understand that the white has been discontinued, although I'm sure there must still be some available.
