Hodinkee article 36 vs 40 mm day date? 36 yg appears to be winner

Did anyone read that article posted 10/5?

The writers opinion seems to lean most favorably towards 36mm and yellow gold.

Any thoughts?

36mm is traditional size.
40mm watches look large, have big presence, often catch a person's eye etc... Consequently, over sized watches sell well.
My favorite Day Date is the 36mm yellow gold with green dial. The only place I have seen one is the Rolex catalog.

I like that combo too. Usually it's on a green strap but I've seen one with the pres band

That's the one in the Rolex catalog. 36 mm DD, yellow gold, Presidential bracelet, green dial. My favorite DD. Thanks for uploading the photo.

Personally, tried both and prefer the 40 even tho I have smaller wrist size. Used prices on the 36 in yellow gold is $12k or so, this makes it a 'bargain' per se.

I only wish the 36mm DJ had the upgraded movement. The 36mm DJ is the perfect watch.

However, I don't much care for Hodinkee as I believe they have an agenda of their own which they push fiercely. I like it here much better.

Winner implies there was some sort of competition. This article or blog or whatever it is just happens to be written by a guy who likes the 36mm better...mostly because of an earlier fascination he had with his uncle's watch. I could care less.

Not sure, see them online all over for 20-something yet used ones from circa 2000 or thereabouts can be easily found for $12k. Diamond dials are a bit more and there are an abundance of yellow gold 36mm Day Date with Presidential bracelets / fluted bezel online. So the 36mm could be a 'bargain' if you enjoy the smaller size.

It's hard to compare with all the updates the DD40 has. In my opinion, the DD40 has got to be a better watch. Which ever size you prefer is personal preference.

Maybe a 18238 might be had for 10-12k

But a 118238 seems to start more like at 14-15k

Interesting read. Thanks for sharing. Both references are amazing in their own right. My preference is the 36mm. Really hard to improve on that. However, Rolex did an amazing job with the 40mm.

Yes, quite possibly. Been shopping for a DD for months yet prefer Everose and so am in a different bracket as there are a staggering amount of yellow gold used in the market. Finally decided the heck with it so going the new 40 with chocolate/diamond dial. Am about 30 to 45 days from ordering it. Am never one to rush a purchase so can shop around until the right deal comes through. Wish the yellow gold 36 was to my liking as they are far less costly and see them all over the web.

The new movement and improved bracelet won me over, plus when it comes time to sell will not need to worry about all the 36mm older movement market saturation.

Good choice. Those run like 40k msrp if I'm. Not Mistaken for a 40mm rg diamond

228235 model

Actually do they makE the models with 8 diamond 2 baguette or is it 10 baguette? If 10 baguette maybe it's closer to 45k?

10 bags, figure $30 out the door or a touch more (VAT back could be even less). Pound sterling tanking helps. :)

A few USA ADs working the numbers right now yet getting the word out to them due to finally being 30 to 45 days out, so we'll see as am an easy sell and happy multi-watch guy for decades. TRF trusted sellers can PM their best deal, I can wait a bit for delivery so am easy money. :)

Thats the reason why i went with the 118238 which was more around 15k for a older 118238. Compared to 24-26K for a 40mm DD. Pretty much both respectable and size wise a little different but nothing to make me want to spend 10k more. Now that I've had it for a little while i love the 36mm size. Its a classic size and fits me well. As well as having a little piece of watch history in the original president size. While still getting a heavy bracelet and polished lugs.

Interesting article. My personal preference is the 36mm. The DD does not need a larger size to have presence and the 36mm just seems so much more elegant to me. There is only one icon and it 36mm. Don't get me wrong, the 40 is beautiful but not iconic.

I would like an older model 36mm in WG. That would feel great and not be as much of a Beacon to others.

DD40 for me!! Next year I hope! I had a 1601 DJ and a 116264 TOG and 36mm is just too small for me personally. I traded them both away. I kept thinking classic size when I would wear them but the 40mm watches just felt right in general. IMHO 40mm is the perfect size. I don't go bigger than that.

It's pretty simple for me. My dad owns many 36mm DDs. I've had the opportunities to wear any of them more or less anytime. I never had one on my wrist for more than 5-10 minutes despite the proportions admittedly being perfect.

I simply never really took to the size. Too small for my liking.

The first time I tried on the DD40, I knew it was special. The proportions are also perfect, the size and weight provide endless warm and fuzzy feelings ;)

All of the extra bells & whistles and "upgrades" are just gravy for me. It's just extraordinary.
