Value of box and papers

What does original receipt, warranty, box, booklets and service history receipts add to the value of an early 90s sports watch? All else being equal - assuming watch is in "excellent" shape.

It would depend on how badly a person wants them

I like having a full set and it gives me some assurances the watch was not stolen. I only buy watches with box and papers so they are invaluable to me.

Depends. Vintage watches with papers fetch quite a bit more than those without. There are quite a few modern watches to choose from so papers now aren't to big of a deal, but 30 years from now it could be. A 90's sport would probably be $500-1k higher with full set depending on the watch and the desirability

A dealer will probably beat you down £500-700 for that so I'd take account of that.

I would say a 300-400 hundred dollars. Thats what I would try to bargain a seller down on if I really wanted the watch.

Totally depends on the watch and the condition. For a 16610lv, it's easily a $1,000 difference. For an exporer 1, it's probably closer to $500. For a super mint example (unpolished or some stickers) the difference would be even more.

It depends. For new watches it's probably $500-1500. For vintage watched it can be fortune.

When I tried to sell my Y series Sub to a Trusted Seller the price without papers was about $500 lower. I had both boxes and the manual. Now that the watch is off to Rolex for service I should have those papers and hopefully it will make up the difference.

Then I'll buy no box and papers anytime! Pay $1500 for expired papers and a box that goes in a closet? I don't think anyone is going to sell an early 90's Submariner (or any sport model) for $1500 less because of no papers. A box is $100

How does that make sense when a service is $500-600 bucks

This sums it up perfectly. Vintage obviously $2-$4k more for a complete set and far less on modern models.

Very true. Sending a watch off to RSC for service will have it returned with the service warranty paperwork memorialize make, model, etc.

Thanks for the input guys. I had mine serviced at RSC last year and it was around $900. Don't have papers handy, but believe they only replaced the bezel insert.

200-500 depending on the model. In resale the values adjust accordingly, but IMO it helps move a sale along a little easier as more times than not people want to have complete sets.

Box and papers have always raised or lowered the price by $500 in any deals I have ever made. If someone tries buys a watch off of you for more than $500 less, don't sell it!

It is always nice to have a full set but if I see a watch I really like and the price is right would I not buy it because no box or papers NO. I just picked up a nice 16710 no box or papers am I happy .. You bet .. Answer to your question it would vary for my 16710 probably $400 To $600 IMPO

Depends, some booklets bring a good price. A Rolex Bezel instruction booklet is a $300 plus item itself. A good set of boxes can run a couple hundred, misc booklets $ 25 plus per. Original invoice and warranty papers are value added. Do you need these items, No but experience says it easier to sell a watch with accessories. Prices are higher with than without.

It's pretty clear that most everybody is just guessing..

Market price is market price and the goodies don't "add" anything. If a 20 year old model is market at 5,000, then nobody is going to pay 6,500 just because it has a box and outdated warranty cert unless it is a rare/collectible.

You have to cut the herd down to rare/collectible, vintage, and typical modern models.

Try to get more than a couple of hundred "extra" for a 16610 and you will be sitting on it for a very long time, and a 20 year old DJ isn't going to move for anything extra. If you have a 60's Daytona with provenance, you might be hitting the jackpot.

I would never purchase a watch without box and papers. Just my personal opinion. So the value is essentially deal or no deal.

I think people tend to over value the "box and papers", this has been discussed so many times here on the forum. I would rather have a service history, or a fresh warranty from an established seller, rather than buy from a stranger because they had the box and papers. First of all, there are so many counterfeit boxes out there for $75 that the box thing isn't so exclusive. Second, if papers (more recent, the card) are so valuable, don't you think they could be very easily reproduced (counterfeit). Yes, it's nice if you could put the entire package together, trusted seller, freshly serviced watch and original box and papers. But not a big deal if the watch doesn't have them, as long as the watch price reflects that, and $500 should be the max difference. So you buy it for $500 less and if you want to sell, you sell it for $500 less. If you think about it, people who aren't WIS, would be like " why would I keep the box"?
