Rolex catalogue, is paper out of date?

I remember when I purchased my first Rolex, I had a catalogue (of course paper, back in those days there was no internet, as a matter of fact it might have been on parchment), I read it and looked at the pictures 84 times, enthralled each one. I am considering on purchasing the new DJ 41, waiting for Basel next year to see if it (hopefully) is released in SS. Anyway I got hold of a Rolex catalogue, with the new DJ41 (TT) and of course all the other models. It was a very nice publication, great pictures and explanations, but I found it kind of.... archaic (?) Hard to explain, but I feel looking at the Rolex website and other internet sources much more interesting and exciting.

Is Rolex behind the times still producing a paper catalogue? Does it still do the job it's supposed to of presenting models and features? Or would they be better off simply using 100% electronic media?

I guess it is not necessary but a nice paper catalogue helps supporting the product and brand image.

When I first started looking at an AD I received a catalog, like this. I hardly looked at the thing.
So, I'm not sure why this is still offered. You have to go to an AD to get one. While you're at the AD, you will be trying on watches-or I least I will.

Oh well.

Of course you will be trying on watches at the AD. The brochure is a sales tool in that it acts as a reminder of the 'product' after you have left the dealer.

I work in Advertising and the shift from off line paper products to on line digital media is huge. This brochure should at the very least be available as a downloadable pdf.

Okay guys I may be the only one but I find the paper catalog charming. When a friend is interested in a rolex I grab the catalog instead of showing them to a computer. I just like books I guess, I'm a bit old fashioned.

i have to agree with this as well

to be fair the whole idea of a mechanical watch is "outdated" but we buy them because they have a certain charm

the same could be said about the brochure...if you are the kind of person that prefers a computer screen to a beautiful publication maybe you should be looking at apple watches instead of mechanical watches

also a computer screen (even modern "retina displays") is still far behind a printed picture in terms of pixel density meaning a printed image in a brochure is still of higher quality

My thoughts exactly. I'm with you on this one, Josh. I don't care too much for online catalogues. Just something about opening up and flipping through the pages.

My kids love ripping pages out of them and throwing them around the house. I would be okay with just online media.

I heard a marketing guy say once that a purchase is a souvenir of the brand experience. A paper catalog serves a similar function.

Paper catalogs will always be in vogue with a higher class clientele

I agree 100% (says the man with a Master Degree in Interaction Design )

Also much more prefer to flip through photo books compared to look at photos on the computer/iPad. Very pleased with the books I have created in Photo and then had them printed and delivered by Apple.

Cheers,
Joe

I would assume that the paper catalogue is part of the overall marketing of the brand. The internet does not replace certain thing, it enhances them. Timely information when you are looking at it with the internet page open. But when you close it, the information will not be sitting on your table when you enter the room. All part of a plan.

Still prefer paper, and actually holding the booklet as opposed to only looking on-line.
