Hi. Just after some advice . I have had the watch a fee years. Inherited. The dial has what looks like a scratch. Just wondering what could have caused this to happen. Thanks in advance. P

Then it's hard to guess where it comes from.

No it hasn't it's always being this way. I inherited from an uncle who has passed and I never got to ask him. Just thinking of selling ,but not sure of an explanation of how the damage has occurred . Thanks again

Looks like someone intentionally did that. Hard to believe a watch smith could do that and it did not happen from hand drag. Looks like they tried to draw a baseball diamond on there.
Too bad as that is a great watch/dial combo.

Not very likely; whoever claims that would need to come up with a very convincing argument.

that scrawl connects the 3,6,9,12 markers. Pretty unlikely that it would be anything that happened by itself. It seems to clearly be intentional (or unintentionally) by somebody at some point in time.

The marks do look worse under direct light, not that easy to see at times. Looking at the pictures above I've noticed a mark under the 6 baguette . WI'll try and get better pics up tomorrow. Thanks everyone for showing a interest. Thumbs up.

I have no idea why but agree that was intentional as there's no other logical explanation, but I'd love to be proven wrong because that's just wrong

Is that dial made of some other non-standard materials, ie. similar to the lapis dials? It's a weird pattern but it looks more like a crack than a scratch.

It's called a Vignette dial.

Just a thought. I've been told the bezel isn't rolex original. If this is a tight fit "Going to sound dumb " but could it be stressing the dial .

I think that "stress" cracks is the best descriptive of these lines. If the rehaut for some reason is pushing down on the dial with even pressure all around the outside diameter perhaps that could be the cause.

If we're going with the "stress crack" theory, if the dial were not fully seated into the movement or something was holding it up, and you attempted to install it, the inside of the crystal might push on the three largest, thickest diamonds and cause stress crack, literally bending the dial along those axes (would even account for the weirdness under the 6). Of course, it could never have been installed completely that way: the hands wouldn't be able to travel. Could have been a mishap while re-assembling? Do I get creative points for trying?

This is unfortunate. I hate to say it, but I would say that that scratch could only have occurred by some deliberate action by someone who had the watch apart. Maybe scorn, extreme frustration, heartbreak or possibly substance abuse could have fueled this unfortunate defacing of the dial.
