Ugh -- Daytona Ceramic

In early August, I went into the local Rolex family owned store in my town. I was thinking about getting a second watch after daily wearing my TT Datejust for 31 years. I had read about the new ceramic Daytonas and it struck a chord. Long story short, I looked at other watches and when they had a pre-sold black and white one at the store two days later, I saw the white and put down a 50% deposit. When I had first asked about the wait, they thought I could get a black one by year end, and a white one in spring of 2017. When I put down the deposit, they said that a white one this year was a long shot, but a possibility. I was very stoked.

I've been stopping in every month or so, and did recently try on a Platona, just for kicks. After being a daily reader here (very dangerous...) and trying it on, I got kind of intrigued. Skip to today...

I text my nice salesperson to see where I am currently on the list and what the ETA is. I'm #4 for a white one and mid-2017 at the latest.

I am ramping up my search for a slightly used platinum Daytona and will keep the SS order in my back pocket. Life is too short, methinks. And the platinum Daytona is one sweet watch.

While the wait time for a first time customer is probably not excessive, I am losing my patience about waiting for my SS ship to come in at the same time as I am getting more and more excited about the Platona. Perhaps I should set up a GoFundMe page!

It's called D500 fatigue - can be costly by adding watches just to pass the time. Not that I'd know about that? Any one need a Ck?

If you love the look of the Platona, and the weight, then you should go for it. A trusted seller should be able to source a lightly used one for you. But buy whichever you LOVE.

I had both and ended up with no desire to wear the SS, and had a backup plan for that cause my son now owns it and awaits engraving

LOL

Are you saying it's like getting a Ferrari because the Porsche dealer didn't have the Twin Turbo S in the right color?

Dammit, the next person that posts a Platona picture better be selling it. Otherwise you're all just enablers...

To clarify, I would opt for the platinum because I really, really wanted it and not just because I can get one sooner.

Not sure if it's still available, but DavidSW posted one yesterday.

I have a gold Sub and an SS one and I mostly go for the gold when I have a choice, so I'd just go for the Platinum if you have the funds.

If you really want the Daytona-C you should be patient. I put my name on the list at a local AD with no previous relationship in August or September and got mine this past Sunday.

While I was there, they let me try on a Platona. I think they were trying to get me to pass on the Daytona-C lol.

I will say this, it was a beautiful time piece. I was amazed at how much heavier it felt than the SS.

At the end of the day, you have to go with your gut and choose the watch that sings to you.

I waited 6 months for 116500 LN 002, the longest wait ever. It was well worth it. I have also an incoming 116506 Platinum too. I had to get rid of a couple of Rolex watches to buy that mighty watch. I asked whether it was worth the trouble going through that, almost everyone said yes. That's the ultimate Daytona no matter what but I was advised to keep my 116500 LN 002 considering lack of availability of the watch
Please don't make rush things up, visualize yourself in a situation what you would feel when you see a Cerachrom Daytona in someone's wrist? Would you ever feel regret not waiting or be very happy to own the ultimate Daytona without waiting that much

X2. I tried on the platona and it's incredible, the SS won't survive in the collection. Just listen to the words of wisdom from the daytona guru...Dr.Tom.

If you can swing the Platinum Daytona I would go for it. The SS is nice but is caught up in the hype and price of a updated classic.

Good name! Back when I was in Corporate America, we had a highly leveraged company with a less than thrilled bank group. We called it "bank fatigue" and it was very appropriate.

My wait going from 4 months to 8 months likely isn't going to work for me.

I think you should buy the Platona, now. (see sig for justification)

When the cerachrom arrives, you can compare the two and if you still want it, get it. If you don't, then I'll take it. Ship it here from the store to save on sales tax.
