WG DD40 vs WG Sky-Dweller?

Hi all,

First post here.. I currently have a 12 yo SS Omega that I bought brand new for about $1200. After 12 years I feel that I'm finally ready to replace it with a Rolex. Last weekend I tried the WG Sky-Dweller at my local AD - and fell in love with it. But yesterday I discovered for myself DD40, and it looks super nice in WG as well.

I always wear jeans (at work) or shorts (outside of work) - but despite that fact, I couldn't really warm up to the Daytona watches, so I'm not considering those. My plan is to buy just one expensive watch and use it on a daily basis - until my newborn graduates from college - and then it would be his graduation present.

So with all that being said, I have a few questions for all you fine Rolex people..
1. Would anybody happen to know the difference in weight between the SD and DD? I loved the weight of the SD, and as far as I understand, it weighs about 240 grams - what about DD40?
2. As far as wearing it - how easy is it to scratch or dent a golden watch compared to SS? As I plan to use my new watch daily - I'm slightly concerned it might deform, or am I being paranoid?
3. As far as DD40 issues with the date change at midnight - can anyone comment whether those issues have been addressed, or should I expect I might possibly have to send a brand new watch in for repairs?
4. Have there been any problems with SD watches so far - recalls or other issues - to anyone's knowledge?
5. Have there been any problems with DD40 other than the date change?
6. Has anybody regretted buying the SD after their "honeymoon" was over? And if so - what made you feel that way?
7. Anything else anybody could suggest/recommend/comment on?

I like the skydweller but if I was one and done in PM between those two it's the DD40 for me. Have you considered the WG sub or WG GMT? Might be a touch more durable but not substantially.

I'm going WG DD40!! 40mm is my sweet spot. Blue or green dial. IMHO

Gold does dent easier compared to SS, based on my experience. Just be a bit "wrist conscious" and it should not be a problem. Hairline scratches on PCLs occur roughly at the same rate on both SS and gold.

Nothing major ... some users, including myself, noticed that the watch doesn't hack at a certain setting where it is supposed to hack. Was fixed under warranty by RSC. Super smooth and very quick service by RSC Toronto. Don't know how "common" this is.

I have owned WG ivory dial Sky-d for 2.5 years now. No regrets at all ... it is a keeper for me. Very beautiful in the metal, and makes me smile everytime I look at it ... what more can I ask for?

They only had the black dial one with WG bracelet - I kind of like the Ivory dial better from the pictures - but black looked great as well. Actually, the dial was so reflective it didn't seem black at all, only under certain angles..

I've looked at them all, but I preferred the SKD initially - and also added the DD40 to my short list as of yesterday

I've only tried the SKD - didn't know about the DD40 at the time :)
And I only fell in love with the WG SKD - it was a combination of looks and weight. The SKD on the strap left me indifferent for some reason..

Also, I was just wondering - what does the 100m rating actually mean? Is it safe to take a shower with the watch on? Or jump in a pool? Or is it splash proof and that's about it?

I believe oyster case is suitable for those water activities. I have worn it in heavy rain (see pic below), with the watch exposed, and also wash it regularly with dish soap and water. Still works! That is what I love about oyster case ... it can handle almost anything!!

Vladi, 100m is 328 feet.

That means the Rolex is waterproof to 328 feet under water.

How deep is your pool?

I would say SKY Dweller but nothing can beat the unshakable image of Day Date.

Both are great watches. You need to go try on the DD40 as it is different in size and wear. For me it felt like a big difference. The Sky Dweller is also on an oyster band with the easy link system should you need to adjust on the go. The DD40 is a fixed band. There is also about a 5k difference in price for both new or used through the TS. No wrong choice. I would go with the Sky Dweller.

SKD seems to offer more what with the annual calendar and GMT function...but I'd have to go WG DD40 green dial.
