A good representative FP collection

Well, I have been sucked into another hobby. So Far I have acquired a Lamy and a MB fountain pen.

On the hunt for more I am wondering are there three or four reasonably priced (<$300) FPs that should be in everyone's collection.

Thanks

BP

That is a great question!

I think you would get a different answer from anyone you asked. Here are my thoughts:

1. Montblanc 149 - You can get these pre-owned at time for around the $300.00 price point you suggested. Keeps you eyes open. The do come around from time to time.

2. Parker Duofold - International size. I like these in the Black and Pearl or the White Ivorine. However they are all beautiful.

3. Parker Vacumatic -

4. Lamy Safari -

5. Montblanc 146 or 144 - Both are well below $300.00 pre-owned.

6. Pelikan 400 -

7. Sheaffer Balance - Oversize

There are hundreds of such pens.

Here are a few ideas.

From left to right: Pilot Custom 743, 742 & 74; Sailor 1911L; Platinum #3776 Century; Sailor 1911S

Platinum President

Platinum Modern

Waterman Gentleman

Sheaffer Legacy, Legacy 2 or Legacy Heritage

Sheaffer NoNonsense

Parker Vacumatic

Parker "51"

That's a fair start but as I said there are literally hundreds that should be included

You'll need an Italian pen for sure. So you can understand the torment and joy from having such a thing At that price range I would suggest a Montegrappa at a deep discount. Oddly enough these have not been very tormenting for me but have been very joyful to write with. Visconti however, hold on to your hats!!

Oh, there are so many great vintage pens. And new ones. The Pilot Custom 743 is certainly in my bead. You might want to find a "theme" and follow it from there.

In my insignificant opinion, there are collectors and gatherers. A collector gathers items on the basis of a theme. Sterling silver fountain pens, for instance. Or Waterman Le Man 100 fountain pens. Seiko diving watches. Etc. Gatherers buy and accumulate whatever strikes their fancy at the moment. As you are starting, you may want to establish your path from early on. In my case, I'm a simple and lowly gatherer.

Don't forget that you can have individual smaller collections within your larger group of gathered pens as well
