Business trips can be costly

Hello folks,

I've been active over on the Rolex side for a while but this business trip I just finished up has been an unexpectedly costly one! A hotel in walking distance to a high-end mall led me to buy this - a Montblanc LeGrande ballpoint, my first pen worth more than probably 10 bucks. And then the cross country return trip led to 2 more online purchases - a vintage classique yellow gold and a classique platinum (both also ballpoint) which in my thinking would be great for travel while the bigger LeGrande stays at the home office. Talk about a shopping spree! Anyway, here's a pic.

Haha, I got a kick out of that, yeah I'm learning this forum leads to expenditures I would not have otherwise expected that's for sure. But I'm really enjoying this forum!

Wait til you get the chance at the limited edition pens! Then you're screwed, I bought the DaVinci early as my second nice pen and was DONE FOR! 2 years later and I can fill up 2 12 slot trays with high end pens. Run while you still have a bank account!!

I'm going to second, third, and fourth what everyone has said. I had 1 pen a little over a year ago. Now I'm up to my eyeballs in Omas, Visconti, Montegrappa, and Montblanc pens over here!! I wish you luck on your future attempts to escape the pen asylum.......but you won't make it out with your bank account still intact. Even your credit card might melt. I literally have all of my CC information memorized by now

Decided to give it a try with some classic words, the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Pardon my awful handwriting but I must say, I didn't feel any cramping or discomfort even toward the end. There must be some truth to the hype, smoothness and also the larger size of the pen made it a comfortable experience. See, luxury can be practical!

I've never written with a MB roller, but at least with fountain pens (which are next for you, I'm sure.....muahahahaha) the less pressure you need to apply to write makes for a wonderful writing experience. With fountain pens you only need the weight of the pen to make it write so your hand just guides it along. Very comfortable and I could write forever.

Oh no, now you have me thinking about them seriously! I didn't realize the difference in pressure required to write. That could make a big difference. I'll have to try one out soon.

hahahah. With a roller, you need to apply pressure to depress the ball and allow the ink to flow. With a FP it all works by capillary action and just the nib touching the paper under it's own weight allows ink to flow. Give it a try. You'll be converted.

There is just something so special in acquiring a pen to scribe a trip of any kind.

If that trip is important, then adding of a FP to your collection as a part of that trip is just "natural" to those of us that love the hobby!

When I come to the point where I divest myself of the bulk of my collection, it will be the memories that rule and that will demand what I keep and what is released.

The Montblanc 144 I purchased to document / journal my first trip to Hong Kong and Malaysia. The two FPs I purchased to journal my lovely wife's first trip to Europe. The pens I acquired to create the memories I have of my first trip to Liberia, the Ivory Coast, and other African destinations.

There are so many more! And that is a part of the love I have for writing instruments! We go to our local pen shop and muse upon all the incredible pens. We purchase blank journals, FPs, and inks that we will use to document our experiences.

My wife was hooked. I loved seeing her laying on the bed after a hard day of touring and writing about her experiences. To read them today after 8 or 10 years is to experience it all again. Not to mention the dried flowers, leaves, and other things we both stick in our journals.

Profound magic! You have to love what we enjoy!

So let's say I'm interested in getting a fountain pen. Part of me thinks I should try something fairly cheap, but I am also a fan of quality and cutting to the chase when I will probably get there eventually anyway. Also, I am a fan of buying pre-owned as long as you buy the seller and get good value. I have bought 2 ballpoint Montblancs from a seller who I now trust. The seller has a Montblanc 149 preowned with paperwork and case for about $500. It's a serial number version, excellent condition. I really enjoy the Legrande size ballpoint and this would probably be one that stays at the home office rather than travels. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance!!
