Vintage Rolex Explorer - Help identifying needed

Hi everyone, I have been searching for some time but have not come up with much on this..the history of this watch is it was given to me by a friend who came by one day and said "here", "this old thing has been sitting in my dresser and I don't know what to do with it", it was his Mothers gift to his father on their wedding day. "1950-60's? (His father passed away a couple of years ago) so now I have it, and whenever I try to give it back...he shrugs his shoulders and really expresses no interest in it. even though I have expressed it could be worth something more then just a Heirloom. Unfortunately him and his son do not care for watches. So in the meantime I thought I would dig up some information on it and track down an original replacement band and maybe once it is complete and polished up, maybe he would like it back.
Any thoughts or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Nice piece. Looks like `50's 6298 Explorer. I believe these were one of the references that was produced for the Canadian market and dubbed the "Canadian Explorer" and/or "Dress Explorer".

The winding crown appears to have seen better days and may need some attention. However, the watch looks to be in excellent shape overall.

Don't polish it.

It looks to be a nice example and the case frame has seen minimal polish.

Just leave it as it is. Possibly polish the plexiglass crystal but other than having it serviced (not inexpensive) the watch is best just like it is.

A nice generic 20mm leather strap would be very appropriate.

A bracelet would be a fairly hefty expense as well. Unless you plan on keeping it to wear regularly...I wouldn't do anything really.

The dial is original which is a big plus.

Nice watch for somebody.

I may be wrong but I thought "rotor self winding" was a Tudor term? Ive never seen it on a Rolex dial.
The 6298 usually would say Precision down below or EXPLORER self winding, but the addition of the word rotor stumps me since that is seen on Tudor watches of the era.

The Rolex Meritus has a very similar dial with the same rotor text.

It's more a Canadian thing!

White waffle dials are rare and can be expensive. You need to be careful and know exactly what you have. You will probably get offers on it but don't sell until you understand the market.

I don't think it's against the rules to mention another forum but there are some guys at the vintagerolexforum.com who can tell you what you have. Do not sell until you know!!

Mods if this isn't allowed please delete
