Is it bad

that my Rolex is now just a watch to me? I've owned my Sub for just over two years now. It enjoys the lions share of wear with a Pelagos. I still love it dearly however I recently started feeling that it's just a... watch. It has insurance so I rarely think of it's actual value. I'm an enlisted man in the Army so as you can imagine $8k is significant money to me in general. Should I assign more value to what, when I think about it, is a very special possession? Or is it really just a watch?

It's just a watch but that doesn't mean you should treat it like crap (just IMO.) I treat all my possessions well and take pride in them (IE wax my vehicle frequently, wash it weekly, landscape my house weekly etc etc.)

There is nothing wrong with taking pride and care of things you worked hard to obtain

After a while the newness wear off and watches become average. That's why we are always looking at the next to experience the joy of a new watch. For me it doesn't matter the price it always become just another watch.

Everything new and better becomes the norm after time. This applies to cars, business class, fine dining, clothes, as well as watches. When I worked in my first job I had a fraction of the disposable income as now, but I was no less happy!

It doesn't matter whether it's a $2/£1.60 piece from your local flea pit or a $500,000/£410,000 Patek. It's only ever going to be just a watch. It tells the time and that's what watches do.

Me personally, I tend to look after my stuff, whatever the cost. Whether it's because I come from a very poor background or what, I don't know. I just do and it's my choice and I'm ok with it.

How you view and treat your belongings depends on you and your mindset. Part of me says that there's no right or wrong answer here but then I get pretty cross when I see people not treating things appropriately. I once saw some clot dragging away from traffic lights, spinning his wheels and engine screaming, in a Rolls Royce. There wasn't even another car alongside him. Seriously, some people.............

I still take pride and care for my piece. She gets regular baths and all. I guess I just lusted for so long to have a Rolex, and now it doesn't feel the same, I worry something is wrong.

It is just a watch, but signifies an accomplishment, shares my good and bad times etc. So it is special.
And as a man it is the only piece of jewelry you can pass on to your children.

Like all poster I take care of everything I have, so it will age nicely and not neglected.

It's really just a watch how be it a relatively expensive watch. How ever I still look after my watches not baby them, I take the same care with a £12 Sekoda as I do with a Rolex.
I was always taught to take care of my possessions being from a poor background they were not easily replaceable. Today's throw away society is not really for me.

Judging by all the cliche 'is it safe' posts and the pics of watches with stickers still on (6 mos after the purchase), I'd say you've reached absolute zen.

I bet a number of us on here, me included, envy your state of mind.

I understand when the honeymoon time wears off and you get the feeling of "it's just a watch". For me what snaps me out of it is not having it. Many times I will move a watch, car, etc, and only miss it once it is gone. I say hang onto it as you have already purchased it and it is one of the boxes that you have checked off well.

My Tudor Submariner is just a watch. However, it has become like a dear friend to me.

Forgive me for putting it that way. But, like my Mont Blanc is still only a pen and my Saddleback legal pad holder is just a legal pad holder and my Wayfarers are just sunglasses........you get the idea.....some possessions are just plain old special to me.

I hope you will find your Rolex and Tudor as special possessions but no more than that.
Just my thoughts.

It's just a watch but a nice piece of jewelry also, pride of ownership, accuracy, quality are revelant factors. I take care of everything, was brought up that way. I live by my fathers example, purchase the best quality stuff you can afford, take good care of it and it will last you a lifetime.
Nice thing about Rolex is it always has good value if you decide it's not for you.

Very good point and approach. I also try to have a few watches in rotation, 4-6 now, and so I do miss wearing them if I haven't put one on for a few days or even weeks, it's the best way to keep my interest and to know when it is time to a make a change.

It's just a watch. That said, if it doesn't bring a smile to your face every time you look at it, it's probably time to sell it and move on to a G-Shock. Why leave that much money tied up in the something that you don't enjoy?

Truthfully it is just a watch, don't wear it as often and then when you do it will definitely feel more special!

Yup, it's just a nice watch. I remember my friend laughing at me when I said that my Sub was my beater watch. That was the day I realized that they are just watches and that's why I cut myself off from getting any more. There's really no need for me to spend that much money on just another nice watch.

Only you know how special any of your possessions are to you. I personally would not waste any precious time sweating the appropriateness of my level of valuation of any of my possessions unless I was contemplating their sale. Sure it is just a watch.........but it is a really cool watch!
