To Flip or not - 16710 for DSSD Deep Blue

Hey everyone over the last year and a half I have bought a few watches (Daytona SS, DJII TT and IWC Pilot Chrono) liked them all but Dayton was too small on me and the DJ being TT was not the perfect 'everyday' for me, I am definitely not fancy, IWC was nice but want/need Rolex on my wrist. Im a big guy and the only watch that makes me go wow is the DSSD.

I bought my GMT new from an AD in Dec. of 1999 and thought it was the only nice watch I'd ever own. But then I stumbled on this forum. Well you know the rest. The GMT and me have many memories sad and happy, but I'm ready to start a new chapter in my life and want to kick that off with a new watch.

Flip for DSSD or keep and save?

If you can afford to keep it I definitely would. It's the perfect watch and will only increase in value.

Hey don't you love how everyone will say keep it and buy the other watch also lol I'm assuming money is an issue or you would'nt be asking ....two very different watchs the DSSD Blue is one beautiful time piece ! yes do it

money is never a real issue here. people come here to validate a slight push to bliss.

First off, the OP clearly gives the option to keep and save. So it's obviously a viable option in this case.

Second, I was in this position about a year ago. Trade my LVC for a D-Blue? At that time I really couldn't afford to spend the money and another $12k+ watch. Since I was having a difficult time locating a D-Blue to make the trade it was fortuitous that while overseas I stumbled into an AD that happen to have one in stock. I gave over my credit card and walked out with the d-blue on the wrist.

I was lucky for all this to go down this way, as I quickly realized of the two watches I much preferred my LVC. Since my financial situation had not changed I still had to move one or the other, but more importantly I had the opportunity to own both simultaneously. So I sold the D-Blue and kept the LVC.

Fast forward about 10 months and I found myself with a great opportunity to buy a like-new d-blue. My toy fund was replenished, so I pulled the trigger. Knowing I can keep and enjoy my d-blue without giving up my LVC has given me the chance for my d-blue to marinate. It's one of favorite watches now. I don't know if I'd choose it over my LVC but it's certainly a close call.

Anyway, point is, it took me 10 months to add and not trade, and I'm extremely happy the way it worked out.

keep the gmt2 and get a dssd for 1/4 to 1/3 less --- maybe even more. then if you like the dssd, upgrade to the cameron.

The list of people who have sold/traded their 16710 and now regret it is very, very long. Especially those who bought it new. Don't add to that list! It's one of the all-time best references Rolex has made.

Do you still wear and enjoy your 16710?
I moved my Coke bezel 16710 on last year to part fund my LVC. I thought long and hard due to the fact it was my first Rolex purchased new from an AD in 1997. In the end because it wasn't getting any wrist time it had to go. No regrets so far.

Keep and save, without a doubt. Not just because it's a great and sought after watch that is no longer available new, but because it's yours, and you have 18 years of life history tied up with it. Sell it now and you will regret it, in time.

The DSSD isn't going anywhere. It, or another model, will be there to buy when you've got the funds.

Funds would allow for both, just grew up frugal and it's hard to kick that even though things are different now lol. The wife says she would take over the GMT so I could get the DSSD. Chewbacca posted about trying the all black DSSD first then going for the D-Blue. Would you be frugal or dive right in?

If you want a DSSD Blue don't waste your time or money on black dial. I had it and it did nothing for me so flipped quickly and later got the Blue. The gradient blue black dial makes the watch what it is. Without that dial I would never consider it. So keep your GMT and add the Blue and call it a day!

Yup. This is the best advice.

Black and SS is a classic Rolex diver look. The DSSD is simply not a classic Rolex diver. The extreme size, thick crystal and blue dial are all part of its "cult" appeal. Buy the blue. Sure, if you love big watches but hate blue or hate the hype the DSSD Black might be "the one" for you, but the SS SD and the SS Sub will always be the real classic divers

Rolex only makes one blue to black gradient dial. Ta-Da! This dial is now the signature of the DSSD. If this is your one true "next 20 years" watch you will pay the premium and immediately forget about it. The DSSD Blue is that good.

I'd keep the 16710, you may regret letting it go. With that said, I had a DSSD and I let it go and i'm starting to miss it, but this time around I'll get a d-blue.

p.s. not letting go of my 16710 unless I were to upgrade to an unpolished one which would be $$$.

I won't do it. I have both, the Pepsi and the Dssd (though it's the original black). I was fortunate that the Dssd was my first watch so it's not going anywhere. Acquired the Pepsi over and over again and this is the third I am on it.

My point is, the Dssd is mine as it was one that went through with me and the longest I ever had on any particular watch so it does have a sentimental value attached to it and if I let it go, yes I can get another but, it's not gonna be the same one that I have had memories with.

Keep the 16710 and save up for the Dssd. You can get any Dssd in the future but once the 16710 is gone, so does the memories you have had with it.

But it's your watch and you should do what YOU want.

I say do it. I'm flipping my 16710 coke tomorrow for the D-blue. I haven't been able to get that watch out of my head since I tried it on.

I like the Deep Blue, but all it is, is a different dial on a DSSD. Nothing more. Is the premium worth it?
