Calling all hiring managers: Rolex or no?

So- I'm 30 years old and wear a preceramic bluesy sub daily. I earned it, I wear it with pride.

My wife thinks if I show up to an interview wearing it the hiring manager will assume I inherited it and judge me for it. Even if the particular manager knows what it is ( I've only had 1 person ever say something about it) I don't care.

I bought it because I appreciate the craftsmanship that went into it, not a status symbol.

My other watch is a breitling avenger seawolf titanium. If we are trying to down play watches- a 44mm wide 19mm thick F off diver isn't exactly understated.

If you are hiring someone that is somewhat young with a resume to back up success- would you automatically assume he didn't earn it?

I wouldn't. I would assume this guy has good taste in watches and move on. My wife who isn't a salesman thinks it immediately discredits me as a candidate.

Thoughts?

I thing you'd have more to worry about if you were 19-21 years old. Wear it with pride.

Agreed. Just because I look and sometimes act like a 12 year old with a beard doesn't mean I am!

If I were interviewing you, I would notice it - but it would have no effect on my hiring process.

Wear it with pride, 90% of people don't notice regardless.

Good luck!

wear what you want but like it or not it will draw attention and quite possibly could make the difference between getting hired or not. all depends on the person doing the interview. is that right? no but its the truth. personally i would go to interview without a watch because lets face it....wearing a Rolex wont help you get hired but could definitly prevent you from being hired.

I'm less interested in what you're wearing vs what you're saying and how you answer my questions.

I say wear it, but don't flaunt it

I bet most people think it is an Invicta or fake. So just wear it.

I feel like this approach is the guy who takes off his wedding ring before going into the strip club.

1. Everyone can see your sun tan ring.
2. The strippers don't give a damn whether you're married or not.

I have to agree with this. The mere fact that you are asking about wearing it, shows you have some concerns. Why risk it? You never know what the person interviewing you will think. Plenty of time after you get hired to wear your great watch with pride.

My wife does a lot of interviewing and believe me, she notices everything.

I dont think people will assume you inherited it, if your resume shows you have earned some money

Whether or not you want the interviewer to see you with a rolex is a different story

Either this or it could unfortunately swing the other way and they think "well hey, this guy has a Rolex already, he clearly doesn't need this job". Sorry if I'm oversimplifying a bit there, but to the other 99.999% of the world that exists outside of these forums a Rolex isn't just a watch, it's a luxury item and a status symbol.

I can't believe that serious interviewer will care. Dress professionally and act the same. That is how you will be judged.

If the person interviewing you knows what you're wearing it could be a good conversation starter to make a personal connection that separates you from other candidates. If they aren't a watch person, it can completely fly under the radar and will make no difference.

You have to sell yourself. Does your appearance matter when you sell? Yes. Does a Rolex help you sell? That depends, mostly to whom you are selling. Can a Rolex turn people off, sure. Do you want to be hired and work for that person? Probably not. If they can't handle the fact that you wear a two tone bluesy sub, F them. Don't forget that you are screening them too.

Those who say it doesnt ever matter in an interview, must live in a bubble. It might not always matter, and it shouldnt matter, but in reality it will matter with some interviewers.

Some people may be envious, jealous, or have inaccurate assumptions about you.

I have had people make inappropriate comments and jokes about my rolex. I dont appreciate it and think it is highly inappropriate, but some people are like that

Don't wear any watch and focus exclusively on your job interview. If it wasn't an issue you wouldn't be here asking strangers. Just my humble opinion.

I'd say leave the Rolex at home for the interview and wear it all you want later once you've had a chance to judge the acceptance level of your workplace. I find people more often than not can get a bit offended by someone wearing a Rolex, a form of predujice which is unfair but real. Why take a chance at the interview. It's just the way the world turns. Good luck & Cheers!

If I was interviewing you I would be thinking that you have the Rolex monkey on your back and that you would be willing to work extra hard to earn all the bonuses you are going to need for your habit. Isn't this basically why the corporate world prefers employees that own houses and cars and have lots of kids?

I agree, as it is on your mind you could even subconsciously draw attention to your watch and that could make you look even worse. As you are 30 I don't think it's an issue altho I probably would only wear a SS Rolex in a first interview.

Also depends on what you're interviewing for. Sales? We'll leave that bad boy at home because you'll look like a smug prick. CFO? wear with pride because you will appear to have earned it. I'm usually the first to say who cares what others think, but in this situation, what others think is exactly what matters so play it safe.

It might help you get hired if I am interviewing you...
some won't notice, some might notice with a positive bias and some might notice with a negative bias.
Many variables involved here.
I like to be myself and I like to wear watches so I would wear mine. Might not be right but it is genuine.

I think you're asking the wrong crowd.... A watch guy's response will be very different from a non watch guy..... Personally I'd find no problems and think nothing of it but I can see how it can misconstrue unwanted perceptions from others...... I doubt it'd help your interview so I'd leave it at home.

I agree for the most part. It depends on what you're interviewing for. Sales? It depends on what type of sales. Auto salesman, real estate agent, jewelry sales, other more expensive sales where commission is mainly or partly how you make your money? I would say wear it because it shows you're able to close deals and make money (for both you and the company). Of course, that's if they even notice it. If you're in sales in a more basic, cheaper industry, I'd say keep it at home for a day.

If I was hiring you I'd be thinking you stole it and that you are a thief. Better yet I'd think you masterplanned a gun robbery in Vegas.

And seriously, who cares? it's just a watch. The one interviewing you should be focused on your skill set and not if you stole, inherited, bought, loaned a watch.
