Explorer 1016 R series c.1988
Hi, just wanted to share a couple pictures of my newly acquired Explorer. Freshly serviced movement and new dome crystal to replace the original flat top. At 36mm it seats perfectly on my wrist. The watch is in great condition which has really helped me get over the initial sticker shock once I had it in my hands ;)

That is super nice.
The domed crystal looks great and adds to a more vintage look. Was it the case that Rolex originally released this watch with the domed crystal but then at some stage during its production changed to the corner edge styled crystal? I'm just curious about the history of these crystals. I think if you go to Rolex for a crystal replacement then will only supply the corner edge style crystal. The 'flat top' really is entirely flat as I recall it does have a bit of a dome, but it is not as pronounced as the domed watch you own.

Yes, you are correct, the original crystal I replaced is not entirely flat. My mistake calling it a "flat top". As far as I know, many of these latest series explorers (R and L) came with these lesser domed crystals. I agree the dome adds to the vintage charm.

I've got an "L" serial, it was not my first Rolex but the 1016 was the watch that I has the strongest passion to acquire. It is not easy to find in excellent condition, and at the time, the price was high...still high today but I don't regret it.

The "R" and "L" serials are the second last and last serials of the 1016 model ever made. They do seem to command a premium price

That watch has a very nice pop (for lack of a better word) to it.

The interface between the bezel and crystal is so much smoother, continuous and pleasing than the standard replacement RSC unit. I wonder why they abandoned the original crystal design?
